Realred96's 1983 1300 2nd gen

Postby Realred96 » February 11th, 2013, 9:54 pm

Time for me to start a thread on the progress on the car....I have been a member for a while so some of these pictures happened in 2011.

Bought brand new by my mom in 1983. At one time our family had (3) 2nd gen Civics at the same time.
In 2010 I asked my mom what she was going to do with it as it had sat since 2005. She said I could have it.

The only problem was It was in Los Angeles CA and I live in Houston TX. No problem, I thought, I will make an adventure out of it and take the AMTRAK train from Houston to LA and then drive the car back. WRONG! I got it running but everything was bad from it sitting for so long. BAD brakes, bad tires, rotted everything. I almost walked away from it but my son really wanted this car so onward we went.

Sure looks good from a distance, huh? More to come! This may be the most expensive "free" car ever!

Ok next chapter: After figuring out there was no way to drive it home from LA we had to improvise. It had to be trucked back to Houston

I researched hauling back my self but the cost was almost $1K from U-haul (a USA rental outfit). I then

tried my luck at the sketchy "auto transport via truck" and was horrified by all the bad stories I read in the interwebs.

Something about missing in action cars, abandoned cars, dented fenders, cars held for ransom by hostile truckers etc etc. Not good.

I finally rolled the dice and picked a service out and hoped for the best. All went well except the brakes went out on the civic when they loaded it on the truck. The trucker was not happy and had to use the hand brake to get it on the truck. Apparently this is a big no-no for the truckers to pick up a bad car so I was happy he got it.

Well the car finally made it (on time actually) but I was not home to get it off the truck. It turns out that these trucks are so huge they CANNOT navigate a residential neighborhood and had to meet my wife in a shopping center parking lot in order to have room to unload the car.

My wife paid the trucker $580.00 cash (no checks nor credit card accepted). It was almost like a weird contraband exchange. Who demands cash anymore????

Anyway the wife had to drive the car 4 miles with only a parking brake (I love her for this) and when she rolled into the driveway one of the 12" tires gave up the ghost and exploded. WOW it was spectacular.

Anyhoo....here is a picture of the car the next day when we started trying to figure out what all was to be repaired....

And a picture of the totally untouched stock nasty 1300 cc of pure power engine!

Thanks, I have done a ton to this car since I took these pictures.

The A/C was quite a job to get working again. More later!

I had to take a picture of this. The bad part is that I actually understand what is going on with this diagram. What a maze!

More on this later, but I retained all the vacuum sub-systems that make the car drivable. I am not one to rip out all this vacuum equipment for no reason.

Although it does not quite run like a fuel injected car, Honda did a dang good job making the car drivable using a carburetor and vacuum controls. Very impressive.

Holy cr+p
We get none of that!
You have my sympathy.
No wonder the car makers went to electronic fuel injection, a much easier way.

Think about having to go to the Honda EM class and the last day they give you 3 of those diagrams and you have to fill in the blanks... Just for that car there are about 5 different labels.
