Gauge of Steel

Post by Randy »

I am going through that now and found structural is 20awg and door skins are 22-24.
But depending on the methods of welding you may want to go up a size or two.
Mig welding no matter how carful I have been would blow through if I hit a thin spot. But if I weld on the new material and onto the old mor3 indirect it is much more successful. Plus it gives some extra material and strength that resisted warping and extra material for grinding.
I will be using 20 through out my repairs, it’s harder to bend and cut but well worth it.

It could be the skin of the hatch is 22 and the framing is probably 20. The skin is very flimsy. Is it the corners and seams?

The outside skin of the body panels (the rear quarters in this case) measured up to .03" (.80 mm) or 22 guage.

A and D pillars were thicker at .05" (1.3mm) or 16 guage.

A heavier guage would be my preference for most patches as it seems to have much more meat and would be easier to weld!
