i found a 1975 civic for $500. it worked great and the engine was rebuilt a year ago, the guy said. then, i guess, the exhaust manifold got clogged when some plate held on by rivets fell off. he found a good engine for a good price and bought it. when he tried to take off the manifold on the car some of the old bolts broke. he then decided to say screw it and bought a later civic. so that's where it stands now. the car with the manifold off and some of the bolts broken off in the case, another supposedly working engine and a nice windshield. the car he says looks nice. is this something i should peruse? how hard is it to get those broken bolts out? i need something quite reliable. by the way i live in Portland Oregon.

I don't know about the USA, but in Australia you can buy a tool that looks like a screw but with the thread in reverse, it is called an EASY OUT STUD REMOVER. It comes with a drill bit to match the size of bolt you want to remove. All you do is drill a hole in the center of the broken stud and screw in the stud remover, and while you are screwing it in it removes the broken stud (remember the reverse thread). Also use a lot of penetrating spray to help loosen the bolts.

It sounds like you are talking about a CVCC exhaust manifold...if so then just find another good manifold. They are known for the inner sheet manifold rusting out, breaking into smaller pieces and clogging exhaust flow...to the extent they have been known to set the engine on fire.
I think the whole problem is caused by some cobbler not replacing the sheet metal circular gaskets that fit in the cylinder head side of the exhaust ports on the manifold...this allows exhaust heat to get to the outer side of the sheet metal inner manifold, and thus burn it out from too much heat(heat on both sides). They are also prone to cracking on the electric weld on the outer cast iron case, which might also be caused by the same pieces being left out of a rebuild. I have a good one that fits 76-79 CVCC in case that's your problem, and you can't find a good one in your area. I know them to be hard to find...I want 50.00 for this one.

Oh God!! Don't use an Easy Out!! Frequently you'll snap the Easy Out off in the block and you'll be really screwed because it is hardened steel. Is it snapped off flush? or is there a part sticking out? there are little gizmos that are made for removing studs, they hook on to your socket wrench. Lots of oil, heat and patience will get it out if it isn't snapped off flush.

If you can get the head off, take it off, get a drill with a nice new sharp bit, start drilling it out and be patient. It will take a long time, but eventually you'll get it drilled out. Then if you can't get it chipped out (using a small awl or other small pick like device) you may have to drill it out larger and put in a ... oh bugger, can't remember what they are called, basically a replacment set of threads.

easiest thing would be to just get a replacement head.

Hey Paul, I think you're looking for the word helicoil. And remember to use 1.25 pitch on those new threads. I'm doing the same thing with my block right now, minus all the drilling and stuff. It should take more torque when it's all down.

I would LOVE to have more Hondas come out for our RallyCross season. I took 2nd place in Production Class this last year (got beat by my friend in his Hyundai Scoupe).

It just takes you, your car (in good condition, make sure your battery is secured tight and your wheel bearings aren't totally sloppy), working seat belts, and a desire to toss your car around on the dirt. If you have a helmet, bring it (Snell M85 or better) but we also have loaner helmets.

RallyCross is like AutoCross, just in the dirt!!

Hope to see more Hondas out there this year.
