This may have been covered before, at the start of last season (2000) i fitted an Accord 5 speed (AUS)to my eb2 civic.
Seemed like a good idea at the time but as the year progressed with different events and tyre combinations(especially my mud and snow type tyres 185 70 13) i found this was a mistake.
1st to 2nd on soft dirt tracks was like going from 1st to 3rd with a standard box.On the flat the 5 speed is ok with 185 65 13 tyres but hills are a killer. Finally my question how long and whats involved with swapping the required guts from the 5 speed into a 4 speed to keep its good diff ratio from the manual for the Accord its ratio was 4.2 something.

Hi Mark,

Best thing to do is try and find another box with the right diff ratio. You cannot swap final drives in Hondas unless you swap countershafts.

These are the final ratio for each gear including final drive (which you need to look at).

Basically it sounds like you have got a 1980 accord box which is utter crap for a naturally aspirated small cap. motor, fine if you want to break world speed records.

The RS box has the same (or very similar) first 4 ratios to the EB box. A 77 accord box internals should be pretty good. An EN 4.933 box would also be good (supposed to be in second gen 1300 wagons, though I have never checked). When you go to buy a box just spin the input shaft and count how many times the diff turns over in each gear (a quick and easy way to aqpproximate gear ratios).

Charles,
I would like to talk to you about running the civic RS gearbox in my Civic GT5 car. What is a Civic RS gearbox and how do I get my hands on one? The ratios look much better than the 4 speed I am presently running. Will the Civic RS bolt directly with my 1200 engine?

Are there any other options available?

Brian,

An RS box is near impossible to find, I had one once but have since sold it in a car at some point. They are a direct bolt on to the 1200 (they came in the Japanese sports version of the 1200 called the RS). You may be very lucky and find one at an engine and motor importers (that is where I found mine). Look for a honda 5 speed that has the sticker GB 1234567. If it is a GB 5 speed it is an RS gearbox simple as that.

This may help, since the Rs five speeds seem to be nonexistent. I found this info on a sheet of paper that came with my IT civic 1200.
73-77 civic 1200
1-14.799,2-8.825,3-5.830,4-4.17
Ok,its the same as the RS with out the last gear
80 civic 1300 only
1-14.384,2-8.701,3-5.825,4-3.98
For comp. use it may be ok if you want to gear up just slightly. This trans also comes in a 5 speed but the gear is 3.23 (way too big of a jump for my motor). Ok guys, don't slam me too hard but this trans seems to be a good alterative, if your running out of your powerband on some tracks. http://www.rvi.net/~dforeman/

Hey Daniel,
I have an authentic RS gearbox that I might be persuaded to sell if the price is right. However, The ratios are not quite the same as the 4 speed. The RS actually had a 4.733 final drive not the 4.933. It did have a different gearset that made 1-5 much lower that all other 5-speeds. Here's how the final reduction goes:
1- 15.056
2- 8.628
3- 5.590
4- 4.004
5- 3.379

Hi Todd,

I am not sure that is entirely correct. Hopefully attached is the original RS spec sheet which does not give the final drive ratio but does give the gear ratios. If it had a 4.733:1 FD it would have these ratios

14.199
8.467337
5.594406
4.004118
3.379362

Ie they would be lower not higher if there is a lower FD. I am pretty sure it does have a 4.933:1 though and will get back with the final answer.

BTW these gear ratios are identical to the standard 1200 4spd ratios with an added 5th gear.

Hey Charles,
According to my CAMS homoligation papers, the final drive is 4.733 or 71/15 teeth. Who knows, maybe my box isn't an RS box, but I can tell you for sure that the ratios I stated above are what's in my box. Here are the exact specs for it.
FD 4.733
1- 3.181
2- 1.823
3- 1.181
4- 0.846
5- 0.714

Let me know what you find out.

Hi Todd
I do have a factory repair manual for a 76 CVCC wagon (USA), the gear ratios you listed are the same as the ones you listed. If you want, I can send you a photocopy of the page?

Hi Todd, Charles,

I have checked out Honda service manual.
RS final drive ratio is 4.733.
1-4th ratio is same as other 1200 gear box.
:)

Thanks Tsuyoshi,
I guess what I have is the 76 wagon tranny. Looks like my tranny has a lower 1st and 2nd gear than the RS, but the rest is the same.
