i recently talked to a guy with a '73 civic which had what he called a mid 80's 1200 honda engine. what could this be? the guy doesn't really know much about cars and i'm thinking of buying it from him. i ased him to take pics of everything for me, so i should be getting them soon(email).
i didn't even know honda made an 1200 engine in the 80's. could he be mistaken?

Your hunch is correct. No 1200's made after '79 (US)
first gen-73-79 1200 & 1500
second gen-80-83 1300 & 1500
third gen-84-87 1300 & 1500
Accords started with a 1600 then grew to 1800. Early Preludes started with 1800.

i talked to the guy again and found out that the engine was correct and it was the tranny(5 speed) that was from a mid eighties accord. i guys dad and his freind who happen to be a mechanic for honda of something put in the tranny... HMMM.. i wonder if he did anything else that the kid doesn't know about?
