I just had the fuel tank from my 74 civic 1200 parts car cleaned out to put in my 79 1200. To my surprise, the plumbing inlets and outlets are different. Could I make the 74 tank work in the 79, or do I need to use a 79 tank?

The 74 tank has less outlets for emissions controls, and a different rubber hose that connected the filler tube to the tank. It will work as long as you use the hose from the 79 car. All you really need to hook up are the fuel line and the breather lines.

along these lines... my '81 Accord has a very strange little behavior that it has developed over the past year.

When the fuel tank is about empty and I'm sitting at a stop light, sometimes I'll start to hear a high pitch whine coming from the tank! it isn't the fuel pump, I've replaced that and the fuel filter.

I've found that if I pull into my driveway, and stop, I can sometimes hear it, even after I turn the car off I can hear it. if I'm fast I can turn the car off while it is doing it, and open the fuel filler door and open the gas cap. I'll then hear a WOOSH! of air.

I'm thinking that for some reason I'm getting a vacuum building up in the tank. I'm wondering what I can do to fix this? is there a vent that could be plugged?

I know my tank has the main filler hose, two hoses that go up and make a U shape by the rear strut, and another line that goes up to the engine compartment through a 1 way valve and I think vents fumes through the charcoal canister.

what lines are essential, obviously the fuel filler hose, and the fuel line to the pump and carbs and I suspect a vent, but do I really NEED the other lines? I'm thinking about when the time comes and I put in a fuel cell for racing.

thanks
Paul

i once heard my bush bomb whine like it was about to blow up (1200) and it was very low on fuel. but that concludes my experience.

You may have your fuel evap line (the one with the 1 way valve in it) connected to ported vacuum. This line needs to be installed above the throttle plate otherwise the 20"hg or so that your car produces at idle will be in the fuel tank. Most AHondas have a long skinny vacuum source for this line it should be fairly obvious.

I have 1977 1st gen. Civic. I just overhaul due to the fault of the oil pump not working. Due to the limited market condition, I bought a used cam shaft and fixed it. But after 2 weeks, the cam shaft gave problem again at the gear connected to the oil pump shaft. I changed again to another used cam shaft. But now, it is working on 3 cylinders and the engine is knocking. My mechanic said that it requires overhaul again, perhaps due the conrod bearing has worned out.( It was changed in the earlier overhaul. I am fed up with the engine repairs already...I am contemplating to replace with another Civic engine of a newer model. can you advise which model can nicely fit into my Civic '77 without any major modifications.
i would want to spend money on overhauling again and optimistically feel it will have problem again. Please help me

Thank you

paul, my bus does that same fuel tank thing. it only started after i bought a new gas cap. did you get a new cap? i think caps are soppose to let some about of air escape, becauce the fumes from the gas build up pressure.

i hope that helps at all,
david

One more thing about the fuel tank, when I put the 74 tank on the 79 car, the heat sheild over the tailpipe wouldn't work with it. I know the general rule is if it isn't needed Honda wouldn't have put it there, but I don't know of a solution that dosen't involve duct tape or bailing wire. Thanks again
