in a few days i am going to take a major chance and go down south about a thousand mile on a train and pick up a 1973 civic cvcc for a very good deal. it has a newer, but stock engine(1200) and a 5 speed accord tranny from the mid eighties.
what kind of pre procedures should i take before i embark on the trip. should i do a full tune up?what tools should i bring with me from home(remember the weight limit).
also how do i post pictures... i have two right now

Speaking of long trips, someone should take a first gen. civic on the hot-rod power tour. It would be a riot.

ALWAYS CHECK YOUR TIRES and make sure that you have GOOD spare. Get a clutch cable for back up. As stated above by ROotUS... Hoses and also the alternator/water pump belt. The basics of course, make sure that you have good fluid levels, oil and water/coolant before leaving and at every stop. A full set of socket wrenches and box/open end wrenches a set of vice grips a pair of pliers. I always carry a fire extinguisher and a tow strap. Oh, and a good repair manual, just in case.I guess you will be driving alone, I don't like to. If you get sleepy get some finger food like trail mix, popcorn or peanunts, for some funny reason that will keep your brain alert. Be careful and have FUN!
Posting pictures is easy. Look here on your left under Documentation, Formatting.

I'd add several quarts of oil to the list...might be a good idea to change oil and filter right before you leave...a set of points, what you'd need to put them in, a dist.cap and a spare rotor too. Sounds like a great adventure to me though. Good luck and let us know all about the the trip.

While you're checking all the fluids, don't forget the gearbox. My gearbox had a completely stuffed fifth gear when I got it and the reason was (I think) that it did a trip from Sydney to Canberra (~350km) just before it was wrecked and the gearbox oil was a bit low.

The radiator and heater hoses are molded specificaly for your vehicle.
Oh, and I don't think that anybody on this board would consider you stupid. Crazy... Sick... yes but not stupid. Folks from the outside world (spouses etc.)would argue that point.
I think that a '73 is a good find.

just so you know, i'm going from LA to portland, OR, leaving wednesday morning. i'm not quite sure which would be the best route. i want take to slow and not push the engine too hard, and i'd like drive down the coast as much as possible, but i don't have the money to spend a bunch more on gas. i'm also planning on seeing the redwoods.
any tips on sleeping stops where i won't get harrased by the police?

straight shot up intestate 5. Beware the dreaded "Grapevine" about one hour out of L.A., many a good car have come to an end there. I hope the weather calms down for you by Monday. You can also go on 101 but that will add many hours to your drive, it might be worth it though because of the great scenery. The real good scenery starts after S.F. on hwy 1 but that could get a little treacherous in foul weather.
I'm really not a very good tour guide... but what do you expect, it's free!

I've done that drive. At best it'll put your butt to sleep real good/ at worst give you some back spasms. Take a small pillow you can jam behind your lumbar in case the seat in the car is really worn out and without padding.

Take it easy and slow. Borrow a cell phone if you don't have one. Seven hours to the bay area, 11 hours to Portland. I think we have members in the San Fran/Bay area, Don's just north of Medford, and I'm in Eugene. If you get really tired and can't push the final two hours into Portland, you can crash at my place, or maybe help me get some work done on my car LOL.

Email me and I'll zap you my addy with phone number.

Better yet, email me your train intenerary because I work across the street from the Eugene Amtrak station and can come say hi when your train pulls in.

good luck!

thanks for the offer tredshed, but i figure if i'm in eugene i can probably make it home, but just in case a back up plan would be nice. i don't have a membership as of now so you are gonna have to post your email address. i emailed Mr. NASR, but he never responded.

quikrick, exactly how many more miles would taking 101 add? assuming its not too much, i'd like to go that way. my only fear is a the combination of good scenery off the road and me being very tired... "wow, the sunset looks amaz...OH MY GO THE EDGE OF THE CLIFF!!!!!!

That 7 hour trip (to the Bay Area) becomes a 9-10 hr trip. But it isn't all in miles as much as it is in time. You can't go that fast (which I don't think you can do anyway!) But the highway is winding and hilly, which could be a lot of fun in a modified Civic, but yours looks pretty stock. All kidding aside BE CAREFUL, a couple of summers ago my two sons were driving my Civic home from a long day, I was in the family van with my wife, a few car lengths ahead of the boys, it was late night, I watched in my rear view mirror as the Civic began to swerve then correct a couple of times but the next time I saw it go off the road, I watched in terror as the headlights disappeared into the ravine. They boys were awake when I got there but like Elvis says "All shook up" So... it happens, BE CAREFUL!

;0)

As far as north of San Fran... I-5 takes me 6.5 to 7 hours to Medford (about the speed limits). Hwy 101 took me 10 hours on my Ninja (again, about the limits). Hwy 1 took me 12.5... and the last 1.5-2hours were flat hauling ass (100+mph) 'cause it got cold, and I was wearing light clothes (it WAS the 4th of July after all). Incredible scenery, crap 40mph limit-2 lane double yellow-can these tourists possibly go ANY slower-kind of road. Also, no fast food from Point Reyes (close to here) to Fort Bragg (way up there). Read, tourist traps.

Dressed better, I'd do it again though. :)

David, bad news about meeting you at the station on Tuesday. Your train #11 arrives around 5:30 in Eugene, and I'll be long gone from work (gone at 4:00). The offer of a place to hang out on the return trip still stands though, so let me know if it fits into your schedule.

As for scenic routes, you could do a little of both. Use I-5 to 580 over to the Bay, and then to hwy 1 up through Mendocino to Rockport, 101 to Crescent City, 199 through the Redwoods (amazing) to Grants Pass and I-5 again.

There's much to see, so if time is no problem you will have a great trip.

on a different note, is the lug pattern the same on a '71 datsun as a 1st gen. civic?
thers a guy down the street with some cool as hell mags on this beat up old '71 datsun 1200. the guy wants $600 for the whole car, which has carb problems and doesn't run. i'm goona ask him if he'd just dell me the wheels.

which carb and where would i look for a good one? i'm still a little leary about getting a carb from a junkyard. the dastun is a bit on the rattle canned wavy shhey metal side, but it has seat fromn a ford escort, another engine block, a bunch of spare parts and a lotus weber side carb that needs to be rebuilt. i just don't have $600 right now. its been sitting there for a while, but he just moved to from the street into his driveway. i don't know what that means. anyone interested in a datsun rally car?

QUICKRICK TO THE RESCUE!

David, while your in Berkely, go by the "CheeseBoard" and score some Aziago Bread. The stuff is made only on Thursday and it is awsome. Get some scones for the road, and some baggette. Peete's coffee is pretty freaking good too.

Keep us updated on the tour.

the immediate fix turned out to be that little rubber throttle cable boot. quikricks seems to stay in one place, but mine does not ans jams up the carb linkage. i tryed useing zip ties, but i want something more permanent before i leave. i'm gonna go to some parts stores tomarrow ans see what info i can dig up.
oh yeah, my fan, that happens to be hooked up through a swith, just stopped working for about an hour, but it came back on and seems fine now. that scares me, though. i'm going to be watching thr temp guage like a hawk.

until next time,

Hey Guys,
I had lunch with David and we went over to the Emeryville Marina and took some pics with my Digital. Stay tuned for pics later this afternoon.
Davids new car is not the prettiest thing to look at but it runs VERY good (stronger than my 74) He was not interested in a trade! In my conversations with him he is very much a purist and it doesn't sound like he will do many mods. He is more into stock restoration, very cool. His mechanical problems should be behind him. Cross your fingers.
You guys are the best, I (for David) thank you for the encouragement and interest. He left the area at about 1:00 PM this afternoon.

GOD DAMN! that fender is ugly. i need some new ones, but for now i'm going to just primer and paint them white.
oh yeah, I'M HOME!!!!!
i didn't see a fake o snow, nor splotch of ice going over the pass too. to go from redding to eugene only took 1 tank! i've found that if i just use the cars momentum and just maintain a constant speed i can get like almost 40mpg. on my way home from eugene was was in such a hurry that i used a half a tank. thats mabey a 100 miles.
one of the first things i need to do to the car is buy a new throttle cable and clean and grease the linkage. that might solve two equations with one thereom. see, even after i went at the nut thingy on the boot with a pliers and got it to stick it still has these slight hesitation problems. not nearly as bad, though.
i took a few pics while on the trip. i'll be taking more in better light, then scanning them. i'll post the best ones.
...and another thing. quikrick, i said that i like like a fairly stock look to first gen. civics. i don't mind tastful mods. like... say...
5 SLOT MAG WHEELS!(think the BOSS) my biggest peeve are body kits. i hate them. spoilers too. i don't even like the idea of drag racing these cars. they weren't built for that(VW's either). i think its a shame and a waste of a good car, but engine/brake/suspention mods for street, i think are great. enjoy these cars, put a fucking VTEC engine in one. i have to give props to some of these people for coming up with and more importantly, doing some of these conversions that i hear about. its just creative people useing what they have. i personally am going to put a header/turbo exhaust, good street dual carbs, a mild cam, improve the brakes/suspention/wheels. i'd like to get a set of deluxe guages and a raging stereo system. as well as completely sanding primering and undercoating the underside and inside if the fenders. the only noises i want are ones that i designate. a rad set of the perfect mags are in the mix also(with low pro yokohamas like mr. nasr's car).
i not trying to get down on anyone. thats just the way i see things.
oh, by the way, thanks again quikrick for your help.

nah. i was more thinking like the ones on that blue '74 in the 14 year kids thread. i think my stocks look fine for now. i have more important things to worry about first. unless i find a deal that i can't bare to pass up, the wheels will probably be one of tha later things. i wanna get this this screaming!
by the way, that is a very nice civic you have there. what year and what mods have you done?
i bet it flys.
also does anyone know if a carb from a '79 accord will fit on a 1200?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Charles R. (64.170.157.157) on Sunday, February 18, 2001 - 12:19 pm:

That 2 door body was totaled about 7 years ago. I used the insurance money to buy the hatchback I now have, the semi-infamous #89 car ($217.00 straight out of a wrecking yard). Both were '74's, the mods have changed drastically over the years. Currently, it's quite quick, but not very streetable.

The '79 Accord carb is a three barrel CVCC unit, not compatable with the 1200's.

sorry, ed. i like how the earlier civics look more. the shorter nose, the more pronounced hood scoop, its little things like that that make or break a car for me. also, there not being very many '73's i couldn't bare using it for parts. it may not look like much now, but the '73 is a solid car and deserves the very best. the person who does end up with the'77 be very lucky, though. its one of the cleanest i've ever seen. thats the kind of car you keep in the garage and polish 3 times a year.
