On my '79 1200, the rubber bushing in the shifter is cracked and it makes the shifter vague. I'm tired of missing shifts. I've tried hondaautomotiveparts.com, but I couldnt really find the piece in their diagram. My question is, can any of you find the piece, or what else would work? Does the stock rubber piece get softer with age? Even when it was fine, I thought it to be a little too soft. Would a new piece solve this or could something stiffer be used? Did any of the larger hondas(cvcc's n' accords) come with a stiffer shifter bushing that would fit in the 1200?

I bought a new one straight from my local Honda Dealership, and every other shifter part, when I rebuilt my shifter 2 years ago. by bringing in the linkage and everything I was able to see all the little parts I would need too. (Like little washers and stuff.) Just like new. And it wasnt just the bushing it was the whole metal piece with the 4 bolts welded on as well.

I rebuilt mine also. Bought all the parts from my local Honda dealer, I think it cost me about $40.00 tops for all the washers, bushings, spring, etc. Most repair manuals have the parts schematic, The genuine Honda repair manual is the best. It made all the difference in the world. No more slop!

Could this be rectified by just replacing the piece with the rubber in it, I've never noticed any springs, would there be any parts inside the trans. that could cause shifter slop?

The bits that wear out and cause the most slop are the bush at the shifter end of the shift rod, universal joint at the gearbox end and in particular the roll pin that connects the shift rod to the box. That 20c roll pin is usually pretty worn and contributes most to the slop. Of course a broken shifter mount also isn't good. Even with the most solid shifter there is some play in the box and there's very little you can do about that.
