As you suspect, yours is the transmission of an ED 1500.

civic 1500, right? 75-79. i don't know why i didn't think of that.

could it be that the 'G' signafies 'gearbox' and the second letter means the engine it came from? GM- GEARBOX-EM1 ENGINE, GJ- to a 1300 EJ motor....and so on. And the same with the engines.... E- engine and D would be a 1500...ED....I don't know why i never put this together before!

wait... i thought that final drive was 5th gear. could someone please explain?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Adrian (Civicguru) (203.42.97.227) on Wednesday, March 07, 2001 - 03:17 pm:

The Final Drive is the last gear before the differential. It's the gear that takes the work from the output shaft and applies it to the diff. Usually you talk about the diff and final drive gear being one, but technically they are separate things with the diff being the bit that distributes the rotational force between the two driveshafts (if there weren't at least two outputs from it then it couldn't really be called a "differential" now could it :)).
5th gear is simply the highest gear between the input shaft and output shaft.

Charles; would you know the gearing for that city turbo tranny (er) that i have? I remember reading somewhere that it wasn't a 'good' final drive ratio?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Charles (137.219.117.127) on Thursday, March 08, 2001 - 04:43 pm:

These are not recommended for a n/a car, but they work well with a turbo car.

1‘¬ 2.916
2‘¬ 1.764
3‘¬ 1.181
4‘¬ 0.846
5‘¬ 0.655
reverse 2.916
Final Drive 4.066

As the city turbo has so much torque compared to a civic EB you might want to keep this box especially if you are going to be adding power to thre city motor, otherwise 1st and second are a bit quick.

The 3rd, 4th and 5th gears in the city could be a bit closer and higher but at 100km/hr (60ml/hr) it is just ticking over at 2600rpm. Gives pretty good fuel economy but you have to drop into 3rd for any high boost overtaking action.
Gives a very high top end speed though. The Mugen race gears sets for the city turbo had the same 3rd, 4th and 5th ratios BUT 1st and second are taller as well to make full use of the low down boost, resulted in a 6 second 0-60ml/hr.

Mugen Gears eh... I could just imagine the cost of those!!

I just found a GJ tranny at this 'yard' that i go to sometimes,(had about 100 just sitting on the floor, and about 80 more on racks 3 shelves high) But it had a hydraulic clutch not a pull one. After inspecting closer, I found a tag that said 85 accord?

I thought that just the civics had the GJ coded
ones?

Charles, thank you for those
