Has anyone out there who's fiddled with RS carbs a bit found out what the float level is supposed to be?
After running half a tankful of premium unleaded water through my other car with the twins on it the fuel filter and carbs are full of sludge . It started pinging on that new lead replacement stuff and I thought I'd try some pupl to see how it went - bad move I guess (from that servo anyway). While apart I thought I'd better check the float levels.

Hi Adrian,
Now I'm in office. therefore now I can't check genuine manual.
I think RS carbs float level is 20.5mm(19.5~21.5) probably.
It measured float rubber height from carb body when float needle valve clearance is 0.0mm.
I hope this message will helpful for you.

Thanks Tsuyoshi, that sounds about right looking at them. One was spot on and the other was 1mm too low. I put them back together and whacked them on with a new fuel filter, after draining the tank a bit (far too much water came out) and adding a litre of metho to what's in there (should get rid of any remaining water). It runs perfectly (for a mild 1200 with a blown head gasket). I'll see if it survives the motorkhana tomorrow...

Hi Adrian,
What dones mean the motorkhana? Is it a place name? I hope your civic is going well.
Exact float level is 21.0mm from genuine manual.
I would set the loat level a little bit lower (about 21.5-22.0mm) because old folat rubbers of keihin CV carbs tend to a little absorb fuel.
If you want quick response at throrrle open bigening, I would set it a little bit higher.

A motorkhana is similar to an American autocross. It basically involves driving around a set course of flags and garages in the fastest time (and the right direction). They are usually low speed (rarely get out of first). Some tests have reversing elements as well. The one on Sunday was run on dirt (lots of fun ). It seemed to survive the day. There were nine test run, three set up at a time and we had two runs of each. At the end of each set of three (six runs in total) it coughed to a stop or at least coughed and spittered a bit (no idea why it was always at the end of each set, but very luck it was
). There was still a little bit of water and muck in the tank but it seems to have cleared itself out now.
The car is running better than it has for ages (I've been meaning to clean out the carbs for a while, this just forced me to finally do it). Running it on Shell Optimax (relatively high octane (and price!) unleaded) it's stopped pinging, but that could also be because the carbs are now working properly. I don't really care how this car goes (other than that it does go) as it's just something to get around in (my proper car is a bastard to drive in traffic, mainly because of the brass clutch). Considering the fact that it's only got a mild 1200 (with a blown head gasket), twin carbs, standard piddly little exhaust, standard everything else (suspension, brakes etc.) it goes pretty well. The only reason it has a half way decent engine in it is that that's what I had lying around when I got it going.
My proper car (I'm sure you've all seen pictures of it) is sitting in the driveway at the moment waiting till I can afford to do a bit of work to it (dyno tune, different springs, get the front suspension geometry right etc.) and run the damn thing.

Hi Tsuyoshi,
I just saw the new pictures of your car on Charles' website. Really like the one of your car behind a newer Civic. I can't imagine that any of your countrymen would not be overjoyed at seeing that old RS buzzing past them on the highway.
By the way, it looks like you've painted it recently...like to see more pictures of that car.

Adrian,
Thanks for explain kindly. But long sentence English is very difficult for me
We have very similar motor sport that called gimkhana. They are usually low speed(for example 360 degrees turn ...etc), and usually use 3rd.gear in a straight. In dirt course motorkhana, We call it "dirt trial". I had entryed gymkhana two times about 14 years ago for beginner class. There is a lot of fun
I had seen sometimes engine coughed by carbs and sometimes coughed by oil clustered out side in oil pan.
That sounds good you have two civics for each purposes. I have seen your yellow race car on your web. You have some rare mugen parts. that's happy things. Someday, I would like to install full adjustable suspension, LSD, rear sway bar, and bigger brakes.
I'm looking forward to seeing your proper car tune up.

Hi John S, David,
Thank you for praised ! I am satisfied with paint of my civic. But that's surprising thing, because It painted in 1988 (past 13 years!) by car restore shop that placed in my home country,"Yamaguchi" county.
To tell the truth, There is many flaw on surface when you zoom in.
I think deep color is photographs well and it is very weak for UV rays( specially red).
David, I think better preservation is in garage, you can avoid to UV rays and night dew.
Anyway,If you have fun,I will post more pictures.
Tsuyoshi
