hey guys. Well i got my car to stop cutting of at lights, thats the 81 1300. Well i didnt it finally stop doing that on its own. Now i have a much larger problem. When i first start my car after it sits for maybe 3 or more hours and i go to crank it up, it shakes fiercely, so bad it broke the 3 bolts that hold on my muffler(stock) and it seems that only 1 or 2cly's are running. At one point i unhooked the plug wires one at a time and found that when i unhooked the #1 and 2 cylenders the car couldnt take it and cut off. When i unhooked 3 and 4 it kept on running. Well it gets woarse. Yesterday the car was so bad it couldnt keep running at all. Now if i puy it in gear and start to dive it i can feel the other cylinders kicking in andd it will finally start running. Also i have a lot of smoke, dark smoke.
Any help would be great, thanks guys and Godspeed.

Hey try a Teenburger! LOL Well A.W. we may need more info...how is the cap, rotor, plug wires? Does it run fine/smooth outside of those parametres (start up and idle)?
Sounds like you have sloberer! Either there is a leak that is draining the fuel bowl into the cylinders and they start to fire as the cylinders dry out or your float is heavy and/or sinking. IS the 81 mechanical or electric fuel pump? My float is heavy as well and the electric I put in compounds the problem. If you get black smoke it's from fuel and running rich...this is all with the understanding your choke is working OK...If the choke doesn't open up all the way it will run just as crappy.

Teenburger? Well come to find out the guy i bought the car from bought a cap and rotor button kit but he bought one for a Toyodenso distributor and not a Hitachi. Well the moron used the rotor button any way. The rotor button was way to big for that cap so the end of the button was actually touching the inside of the cap. I replaced it today and so far it seems to be running better. I won't be sure untill the car sits over night. The smoke has gone away as of now but we'll see how long that lasts. My choke seems to work fine. The plugs, wires, and coil ar all new as of a bout 3000 miles ago. However the plugs are probably far gone seing as they have probably been fuel fouled. The fuel pump is electric. Thanks for the help and Godspeed,
A.W.

One more thing i forgot. Yes the car runs fine outside of starting and idealing. I bew that it was running rich but acording to my Haynes book it say that there is no mixture screw that i can adjust anyway. Also how will i know if my floats are heavy?
Thanks and Godspeed,
A.W.

Ooops..maybe you don't have A & W burger joints where you are! LOL
Well your description is a rich condition far beyond a mixtrue screws ability really.
You have to remove it and weigh it with a float scale (or if it sinks in a tub of gasonline!!, but not very accurate) . Since you have electric pump I would suspect a heavy float...when at speed the jets use up the fuel that is being shoved past the needle & seat if the float is low. At an idle the engine cannot use us the excess fuel and it spills over into the boar of the carb. When it is idling shine a light down the carb and you should see the excess unatomised fuel dribbling into it if it is spilling over. If there is no visible fuel spilling over I am not sure what it could be exactly. Your manual should give the spec for float weight. If that doesn't the paper that comes with a carb kit usually has it. Fuel fouled plugs will clear eventually. Unless you run leaded fuel where you are, if so they will need blasting as the porcelan can get lead fouled (shorted).
What the heck does "Godspeed" mean????? I hear it in movies all the time.

Nope, no A&W burger joint but sounds good. Godspeed means to go with God or to wish someone a safe journey. A few years ago I wanted to start an import car club unlike those of the norm with the violent and unruly type. And being a Christian I wanted the club to be made up of Christians. So Godspeed Racing was born. I am sure that is more info than you wanted but there it is for all to see. Well the plegs are so fuel fowled they almost drip. This I found after the car sat at work for about 7 hours when it would not start for nothing. I hate taking a carb apart. If i have a heavy float do i just replace it with new ones and once i take the carb apart will i need to replace anything other than a few gaskets? Also could it be the accelerator pump diaphragm?
Thanks for the help and as always Godspeed,
A.W.

A.W. If its non CVCC rebuilding a carb is cheap and easy. Just follow the instructions and be methodical. The other option is to buy a rebuild. SHould be reasonable price as well. Just a note if you ever take a carb off a car and are NOT rebuilding it, NEVER invert it to dump the gas out of it. All the sediment at the bottom of the bowl will get stired up and block the jets. If you need to empty it use the throttle and pump the accelerator pump to do so.
Well I am not religious but someone was watching my ass last night. Almost had a 1200 cargo Civic coffin in the transport truck grill scenario as I lost it in a hard snow fall last night and was sliding sideways towards an oncomming tanker... scooted back onto my own lane through sheer fate... Maybe it was your request to the big guy on our behalf??? Good thing I had

Glad to here you are still alve. Sounds scarey. Any way it is a CVCC. Were could i go to find a rebuilt Card?
Thanks, becarefull, and Godspeed,

Any parts outlet should be able to get rebuilt carbs. Are you in the US or Oz?
If that don't work maybe consider a weber, the adaptor plate just includes the CVCC prechamber port together with the other I think?
Yea embarrasing incident really since I have done some Rally stuff before...oh well better embarrased than the soft cruchy center in a hard shelled civic!!!

i live in the US. I would love to get a Weber bur i am concerned about passing emmisions. You are right, better of embarrased then under exposed, 6ft that is. THanks for the info, and as always Godspeed,
A.W.

Well I would try a parts place like Pep Boys or UAP for a rebuild. I do recall a thread in here somewhere about a guy on west coast that does good CVCC rebuilds. The "US" is big place...where specifically?

Hey guys im back. its been awhile but im back. Come to find out my carb just needed a rebuid. Well i got that done and the car starts and drives great but with a new problem. It will not ideal unless the choke is closed (hot or cold engine) or unless i keep my foot on the gas. Any onfo would be great.
Thanks again and Godspeed,
A.W.

Try setting your idle revs higher, or your dizzy may be retarded too much? I am no Mechanic, but thats all i can think of.
