My car for the past couple o days has been making some strange noises, opening up the hood and listening it sounded somewhat like a loose chain flying around at high speed. So with all my wisdom I figgure hmmm loose timing chain. As Im sure you all know (but I didnt till yesterday) the 76 1200 has a belt. So off to my mechanics I go, he tells me its either the belt or the cam. My question is (assuming its the cam) can I put in an upgraded cam without having to do a major overhaul or should this be telling me to go out and spend some money and do the whole shi*eroo all at once. The intial plan was to do things a bit at a time but it seems to me that a cam change is a fairly large and expensive job and I am thinking I might be better off to go get a new and bigger engine that can be upgraded a little at a time? Keep in mind that Im the oil in front gas in back guy.

Dont feel bad, when one of my uncles was a kid he offered to fill my grandpa's radiator. He filled both of them alright, front and back......

Sounds like the 'belt tensioner' They'er fairly cheap and arn't that hard to install.
I wouldn't spend the money on a cam if you like the way it runs now. Unless you have alot of miles, then you have to look at the cam rockers (where the ride on the cam) to see if there is any grooves that would ruin a new cam.
But then a new cam means new adjustments on the stock carb to get it to run within the power band of the cam. hope this helps (I would put in a new belt anyhow if your in there)
