the motor i just whapped together blows smoke occasionally, (or maybe i only notice it occasionally).
i have had the head all redone. but the bottom end had apparently been reconditioned before we got it (my brother drove it for a year or 2).
could i have a list of:
* problems that make smoke,
* solutions

thanks

There's smoke and there's smoke. What colour? Blue, white, brown, black?

You have to be more specific. When does it happen? Cold start, hot start, overrun, WOT?

arr... i think its' teh dreaded oil smoke... it's white. only seems to happen under load and especially after idle (i think)

Are you sure it is white? If so it is most likely water vapour (head gasket problem or similar). If it is blueish white it is oil. Are you loosing coolant?

ar... possibly loosing water... i'm not using proper inlet manifold gaskets, and am losing top end power. hmmmm.
thanks for ideas

When you say you are not using proper inlet gaskets is there a chance coolant is leaking into the ports from the coolant/manifold pasage? It may be sucking down the water. The engine may be OK for now but if you don't do something soon you risk serious damage.

yeah, definately water. i just put the head on, possibly i didn't do something right to do with that? but i'll get some proper gaskets, and if that doesn't solve problem completely, then it's time to rip the head off again.
it took a damn lot of starting this morning, i guess it's not a good thing trying to compress water (seeing that it doesn't compress).
sssssssssssss

anyone want to donate one... feel free!
how many pages? would be nice to convert to text (ocr) with pics in say a web page or something. but i should probably just buy one.
also, i am getting a weber carb (originaly off a 2ltr escort i think) bolted onto a datsun 1200 manifold for $15 aud (like $7 american). that is good isn't it?

arrr... i did the inlet manifold gaskets, not losing anymore water... but there's still smoke. i'm blaming it on the carb now.
it seems it only blows smoke at low revs (when the motor nearly cacks itself anyway)... for instance, when i reverse out of someones driveway with low revs,, i end up backing through a clloud of my own smoke. i set the float level correctly (or better) today... i'll just whap my weber on and see if it be all fixed.
