We own an EB2 that had an engine recon 70,000km ago.It has now got bloody low oil pressure.It states in the Haynes workshop manual that the crankshaft cannot be reground, but yet it says in another manual we have that it can be.Which is true? We have receipts for the engine work and it says that the crankshaft has been reground, if this is the case, do they fit oversize bearings or is the crankshaft built back up to standard size and hardened? Any tips on selecting main bearings i.e. colour codes and stampings. Also are the main bearing caps all one compelte unit?

Honda crankshafts can be reground but in general they should not be reground. The reason for this that they are nitrided. If they are reground they really need to be re-nitrided, which is not cheap or easy. You can get undersized bearings, but not from Honda and the tolerances will not be up to Honda specs. If your crank has been reground the Honda bearing colour coding will not be relevant.
It is possible to build crank journals up to the right diameter but it is very expensive and not really worth the trouble considering the cost of a second hand crank.
In most cases even if the bearings are quite badly worn the crank is ok as they are very hard.

Personally, I'd get another crank rather than bother with a reground one.

Yes the main bearing caps are one piece, usually referred to as the main bearing cage.

Thanks for your information regarding the EB2 crankshaft info. Could you be more specific in what you mean by nitrated. The motor that we have has very low oil pressure as the motor warms up and as engine speed increases it produces a rumble. When fully warmed up the oil pressure is at 4 lb. Is this more likely to be a main or a big end bearing.

A low rumble would indicate a main bearing, a knocking sound would indicate a rod bearing.
Nitriding is a process in which the metal is hardened. Very expensive and a must if you must regrind your crank. (don't do it, get another!)
The Haynes manual is very reliable and very often contains pics from the Honda factory manual.

It is common to have fairly low oil pressure in Hondas at idle. 5 psi is usually enough. Do you get your oil pressure light blinking at idle?

Try a heavy grade oil.

Does the noise happen on the overun?

thanks charles,no light blinking at idle has a pressure gauge fitted.at cold it reads 40psi drops progressivly. when reving at say 1000 revs& rev it up quickly a rumble is present then be comes less apparent as engine speeed increases.we have receipts for recon 70,000 k.m. bak, along with shaft grind. all very odd.
