my car is very smoky on startup for about 30 seconds then it goes away it only does this every few days, it is blue smoke and i think it is the valve stem seals but i have had different opinions from my brother, he reckons the rings are gone as his corona done the same thing
can anyone help me here.

Most likely valves. If it does it intermitantly you may have one valve worse than others or your valve stem seal may have popped off. You may have problems with your rings if it is a high mileage motor.
How does compression test come up?
Rebuild it if it is a high mileage motor. I don't like to half rebuild something so I would say go the whole hog and do the lot so you are happy in the knowledge the motor is fresh.

i havn't got the money to rebuild it, is there any way you can get the vlave stem seals off with out removing the head

Get an overhead valve spring compressor (about $30) from somewhere like super cheap auto. Looks like a small gear puller. Shine a torch throught the springs first with the rocker cover off and you may be able to see the problem valve or valves.

Be sure to remove the spark plug and stuff the cylinder full with a small nylon or cotton rope so the valve doesn't drop into the cylinder.

my motor with a just reconditioned head blows smoke.
i can't remember the motor blowing any smoke at all when i first put it together... then a few days before it blew the gasket i noticed smoke. then it got really bad. then i changed the head gasket - and it still blows lotsa smoke.
would it be just the exhaust filled with oil (the inside of the tip of my exhaust was full of oily sludge... )
i kinda tried degreasing it, by lifting the back end up (on ramps on a hilled driveway) and pouring a litre of turps down it, shaking the car around... then shooting heaps of water into it... and shaking it, then i turned the car around (front end lifted up) and started the motor and let it run. after it blew most of the horrible coloured water stuff out, it seemed a lot better - pretty damn good actually. but now it's smoking a lot again (maybe not as much, but too much)
suggestions? (also i did seem to be running low on oil yesterday, and i had only fixed head gasket and filled with oil the day before.
also the bottom end of the motor had apparently been reconditioned before we got it, a number of years ago.
also, would it be really bad to just unbolt the pistons and rods from my last eb1 (that cooked and broke) and bolt them into this eb1? that cooked motor only blew smoke on startup (valve guides?)

The cooked motor would most likely have stuffed pistons and rings. It sounds like you may have a ring problem on your car if it is burning a lot of oil.
The parts are not that expensive to do an engine properly. Using aftermarket parts you should be able to get an engine like brand new for around $700AUS providing you do the assembly. That would include new pistons, rings, bearings, seals and head job. This way you know your engine will be quite, reliable and longlasting. Trying to cut corners invariably ends up with something failing. None of us has heaps of cash and $700 does seem like a lot of cash for a motor. But when you consider the age of these cars it will be vary hard to find a good second hand motor that hasn't been recoed insome way or another and if it has been played with chances are there were some corners cut. You never know unless you do it yourself.
There are a couple of brand new EB3 short blocks (complete and heads complete) for sale at the moment. For someone looking for a repower to last another 25 years here is your answer. For guys in Australia, they are advertised on the Honda car club of NSW homepage.

i would spend that much on a motor... just that if i'm going to spend that sort of money on a powerplant for my honda, i would rather get ecu and wiring for my er-turbo. then i'll probably have to recondition that... but if it's drivable to get me round for when i'm in melbourne... then i'll soon have enough cash to fix that up. anyone interested in buying a 32/36 weber with redline conversion plate- all bolted nicely onto a stock eb1-eb2 manifold...

An ER can be a little expensive to rebuild but when they are fresh they go for a very long time. If you are not contemplating huge power step ups the old pistons are usually OK. It is very rare to see an ER with a worn bore.
You should find the motor you have is drivable, very rare to find a dead one. As long as the turbo is OK they usually don't blow any smoke either.
Have fun. You are right the ECU wiring would be about the same. That is the way I would go.
