Hey guys, just wondering if anyone can see problems with my intended install.
Single CD headunit mounted in the dash next to the heater control. Amps under the seats, one powering the speakers which consist of: 6" mids and tweeters in pods just under the dash in front of the doors (Both sides, I am intending to move the fuse box), In a box in the hatch, 2 6x9's, mounted to face into the passenger area. The other amp powering a 10" Subwoofer also in the hatch box. I figure 1 10" should be enough.
Any comments are welcome.

Mounting the head unit in the dash will be the toughest part. These hondas don't have a lot of depth behind the dash, plus, the width is tight as well. For my DIN sized CD player(Sony) I had to grind some material from both the metal part of the heater control, and some plastic from the other side. as far as depth is concerned, I'll be using 90 degree RCA connectors and maybe still grinding some of the heater box. The depth problem could be solved by mounting the head unit so it sticks out farther, but I like it to fit as flush as possible.

yeah, i have to mutilate myheater when i install my kenwood deckk...
also using feet/window lever is a bit restricted now, with stereo in the way of window.
the sub will try to kill your 6x9's in the enclosure you'll have in the boot. unless you devide the space inside the box... but then the area wouldn't be much for a 10" sub... but it wouldn't matter too much.
i have 2 8" tandy speakers and some cheap arse tweeters in my box... didn't cost me anything cept $280 for the head unit (got a big rockford fosgate amp for free) and it rivals most systems i know (including a $4000... sucker)
the rear hatch window seems a good deflector for sound to the front... you really notice it when the hatch is open.

Instead of cutting into the heater controls, you could do as I did and cut into the glovebox. This way, you don't have any heater control problems.
Also, maybe my unit was shallow (Alpine CDM7834E), but I only had to very slightly bend the bracket behind the unit for it to sit flush in the dash - only had to bend the aerial connector to get it to fit, all the others went in fine.
I put 6x9's in the panels next to the back seats. You'd probably want to make your own panels and cover with the original vynil if you did that though.

I used an aftermarket tray and mounted my DIN sized unit *under* the glove compartment. Just drilled and countersank holes in the bottom of the glove compartment and used flathead machine screws to attach the tray.
My deck has a remote, so that helps no having to lean way over to fiddle with the controls. Otherwise, it looks pretty pro and only costs about $20 for the tray.

Thanks for all that guys, I plan to fix the headunit into the exsisting space, I know it might take a bit, but I am a lil bit of a perfectionist. I was going to devide the sub box for the 6*9's, or since I was going to the trouble of making pods for the front, I thought of making a big pod for the space under the hatch, and angling the speakers at the passenger compartment, then have a seperate box for the sub.
Also, does anyone know if a CD stacker will fit in the glove compartment?
And is there anyone on this message board from New Zealand, if so please email me

2low2go... probably still has some kits that go in place of the rear plastic "bins/armrests" that are make to house 6x9"s and I am sure they make everything look extra factory. Give him an e-mail and ask.. last I checked they were priced real well..

Hey i'm back from a bad flu...i still have a few kits for the radio mount and also the rear speaker enclosures for either a 6x9 or 5 1/4"(they cover the existing pocket and look stock..now being a stereo installer i've gone quite a few route's over the years with my civic's..i originaly hacked the dash and installed it there..only problem was viewing the display thru the steering wheel. in my opinion i would never hack the dash again(like the look of the stock set-up)for example: in my wagon i have a alpine controller unit mounted behind two-way glass in the rear-view mirror(this is just a cd controller with a aux.input)for the radio signal i found a blaupunkt micro-chassis AM/FM two-knob radio and i'm using a hi-lo converter for the signal. For front speaker placement i went with a co-axial 6 1/2" placed in the lower corner of each kick-panel, with new carpet it's run right over the enclosure and looks almost stock. My changer is placed under the driver's seat(harder to steal)my amps are place in a enclosure which then was placed in the rear seat(can be viewed if the seat is folded down)and there is still about 1" of foam left on the front side to rest against)
my sub box consists of a 3 cubic foot ported enclosure for two 12" subs..for a hatchback i went with a pioneer DEH-M-400 controller unit with tuner.this unit was placed behind the stock display, the kickpanel speakers are the same idea as the wagon. for the rear pocket locations, the passenger side has a vinyl covered panel with a changer placed behind it, the driver's side has a 30 band eq with a cover aswell. the trunk consists a amp rack for 2 rockford fosgate amps, two ten inch subs and a optima battery, this is all located in the spare tire-well area. and the last one i just built for my-brother inlaws vtec civic('78)...the head unit is a alpine controller place in the stock radio location and a cover was fashioned out of a stock '91 civic faceplate. the front speakers were placed in the same location as the others, having a roll cage, he did not want a functional back seat, so i fabricated one out of fiberglass to mimic the stock seat(the cover is placed over it to give it a stock appearance)the amp rack is placed in the back-seat(it can be viewed by un-zipping the cover on each side)viewed from the front..if you would like to see some pics let me know..
Justin

WOW, those two 12's must really kick in such a little car... i can only imagine... I am trying to deside on how I should set all mine up too.... Not having a back seat will make it interesting. Your an inspiration Justin.
