Anyone know of any automatic trannys from a second gen. civic or later, or any early accord/prelude etc will bolt up in place of my 78 hondamatic 1200. Anyone ever do a mod like that or you all just go to the 4 and 5 speeds? I want auto.

You would know why if you have ever driven the Hondamatic. I dont want to go with manual and cut holes where they dont belong.

Fair enough if you want a hondamatic, that's your decision, but sticking in a manual does not involve drilling or cutting any holes. Everything is in place for it. All you need to do is replace the shifter mechanism, bolt in a clutch pedal etc. Every extra hole is already there and just plugged up with grommets.
The bodies were designed to be put together as either manual or auto by simple bolting in the appropriate bits.

Its actually very easy to do. It took me less than a day and I replaced the dash, heaterbox, pedals, and trans(5spd).

The only thing I've heard about the later trannys is not good news. We were thinking of putting in a three speed auto from a later car, many years ago, and were told that, "what feels like an improved, or more solid shift, is actually a binding that the tranny has a problem with". We had a warmed over Accord 1600 in the car and had blown the 2 speeds' torque converter for the second time. The later three speed fully automatic sounded like it might fit, and be stronger at the same time. I can't remember if it was a reliable source that gave us this info, but we didn't do it.
This may sound glib, but get a service manual and try rebuilding it yourself. We did just that to ours and ran it hard for some time. In the end though, we too changed to a manual.
