What years of accord are considered first gen? and the same question goes for Preludes?

My Chilton's shows the Accord came out in '76 with a 1600 and changed to a 1751 in '79. The Prelude came out in '79 with a 1751 and changed to a 1829 in '83.

so an '81 accord engine won't do me any good with a '76 civic?

I don't think that's true at all. Not from personal experience, but I get the impression that the engine change you are talking about is a fairly common and moderately simple project. Look through the threads at the site. Search for the engine change discussions using the "keyword search"

Zippy is right, it is a common and simple swap. The 81 Accord engine/trans will drop right into a 76 Civic CVCC. I believe that it will also fit into a 76 Civic 1200 with some minor mods. The US 81 Accord 5 speed has a hydraulic clutch... so consider that also. Lets see.... ummm I'm sure there's more... just post your questions, I'll try to help.

When using that box, I'd suggest to make sure you get your clutch hydraulic... I once used a 5speed from the Accord, and just mounted my cable. I ended up getting used to nearly breaking a leg changing gears, the clutch was very good though, it picked up one time. And the Accord startmotor pretty much started the 1200 instantly! All good, but after a while I broke off the hook on the clutch pedal that holds the cable.. Thanx to my startmotor I came home, though, with no clutch. I basically started her up in second and drove home... Also, the whole construction holding the pedals started to deform, leading to automatic brakes as you'd clutch... It was a great box though, but I never found a hydraulic clutch before wrecking it. I don't know what gearing it had, but my civic did 180 easy...
