Hi,

Did first gen civics ever have a passenger side mirror as an option?

Aside - does anyone know which of the lower mainland junk yards are best for (or have any) old civic parts?

Cheers,
Brian, Burnaby, BC, Canada

Yes, but they are not common (around here anyway). I only remember seeing one (black plastic). It was broken, so I left it.

Hi Brian,
Nice to see another Vancouverite. If you have a moment, could you list yourself on the 'calling all vancouverites' thread? Thanks. About the mirrors, the best junk yards to go to, would be the A-part auto on Mitchell Island (richmond), Ralph's (N. Delta - 120th st. near Patulla Br), and of course the best would be Chilliwack Pick-a-part. I'm pretty sure the first gen's never came with a passenger mirror, except for the RS, which had the two mirrors up front on the fender. But correct me if I'm wrong. Just go look for a nice matching pair off just about any old car, the looks are up to you. By the way, if you need parts, I've got a parts car, and PLENTY of extra stuff. drop me a line.

In the US they were available. My '77 CVCC has a factory passenger side mirror. This is the chrome mirror not the black plastic one. I've seen one or two of the black ones, I believe they are even less common. Damned shame too.

Remember, the Civic was made in right and left hand drive configurations. So the passenger side mirror in North America is the driver's side in Australia and Japan. So, yes, I'm sure "passenger" side mirrors are still easy to find. Oh, and by the way, I've seen a handfull of passenger side mirrors at the junkyard I frequent. I'll check and see if they have any next time.

FYI

the passenger side mirrors (i.e. driver's side mirror in right-hand drive countries) IS NOT THE SAME as in North America. Australia and Japan had either wing-mount mirrors or round chrome mirrors for the 73 - 76 models. Some 78/79 models did have both...

BUT

using a driver's side mirror from a right-hand drive country as the passenger side mirror idea ... ain't gonna work. IF YOU DO FIND ONE let us all know where.

Thanks for the info.

Oh, and just as a note, my passenger side mirror really is useless. I can't see anything from it. I just bought it to give the car a symetrical look.
I sure would like to get a set of those fender mount mirrors. Very cool.

I did have the black mirrors on both sides on my second first gen (78), before that I had one with one black mirror...(78). After that I had one with 2 round chrome ones (79).. There seems to be no logic to the way they put them on. I like the chrome ones the best.. Those black ones always flipped back at around 150kmh, I just couldn't get them to stand outwards on high speeds...very frustrating!

Funny thing about those far front mounted fender mirrors...look kind of weird(different) at first but if you think about it, one does not have to move ones eyes far to pan them, which may mean that under clear conditions they function better. I've only seen them mounted that way in Japan. By the way, to clear up the confusion about factory Civic mirrors:
Early cars only had the plastic drivers side mirror. I don't know for sure, but I don't think a passenger side was available to match from the dealers(as an option)USA. I have one however, and I know they were available from A/T Enginnering in limited numbers. I bet that they may still be had in Japan...for a price.
'78-'79 Civics had the chrome ones, with a passenger match available from the dealer. Sometimes you will see them on 1st Gen Accords, they are the same part. I also always check the same Accords for roofconsoles, as they were optioned in the Accords as well as the Civics.
And for those of you who don't know it, the intermittent wiper switch is the same as for the Civic...(option on the Civic...factory standard on the Accords...the wiring is in the stock Civic looms already. Hope this helps.

Sorry Ed it's not for sale, but I still think you can get them from Japan, and fortunately they don't weigh much so shipping might not be a killer. I'd try to source them first and then try to see if several people want them.

I am afraid they are ancient history, only fondly, or not so fondly, remembered by some of us Honda "elders". They were pioneers, even before Oscar Jackson, of hot Honda Parts. Look on Jim "Buzzsaws" Honda site to see most of the custom parts once available from both A/T, and Oscar Jackson.

Plenty of plastic LHD passenger mirrors in Australia. Remember, our drivers side mirror is your passenger mirror and vice versa. Charles

(I sent this message yesterday but it never popped up, I have 3 here in good condition (two matching sets and one RHS seperate, genuine Honda).
