Hi,

I have a 78 Civic 1200 I am in the process of looking for a replacement head.

Can someone point me to a source of specs for the heads? Specifically, are all 1200 heads interchangeable? The local shop I use to do the
work told me the replacement they found is missing some bolt holes and studs, which I am not sure if they are important.

As far as I know they are all interchangeable, but for compression ratio reasons, you should stick with the 78/9 head (EB-3).

NO THEY ARE NOT!! EB3 engines have higher comp. domed pistons and larger valves. EB2 engines have dished pistons and smaller valves. These heads will not interchange without modifications.

Hey Anonymous! If you knew Todd, you would know not to post something like you just did!
The heads will interchange, just increasing or decreasing compression depending on the pistons you have. (like Todd said)
Ok, now that I have had a few minutes to pound on my keyboard, I am feeling better. :)
Next time use your name as we are all friends here!

Sorry superforce, but technically you are wrong. The initial question simply asked if the heads are interchangable and Todd's statement that they are is quite correct as EB1/2/3 heads are completely interchangable (as far as actually fitting on any EB block) with no mods at all. That's not to say an engine will run well with any head on it (i.e. stick an EB3 head on a standard EB1 or 2 bottom end and you have bugger all compression and stick an EB1 or 2 head on an EB3 bottom end and you have too much compression.)

Joe: Sounds like they found completely the wrong head (probably a 1500 head which is totally useless and certainly wouldn't fit). As Todd said, stick with an EB3 head as if you put anything earlier on, your engine will no doubt ping its nuts off through too much compression.

One question - Why do you need to replace the head?

My old head has a hairline crack from between the cylinder to the valve guide and beyond repairs of my local shop.

1200 has been a very hard head to find. I am going to check out a local shop that told me they might have one built up for me by the weekend.

Joe, If that doesn't work you might e-mail Travis. He may still have the eb3 head off his 79 Civic

Joe my machine shop that i use has a 'brand new' eb3 head still in kozmoline(?) I think it has a cam also. Ask for AL, 901-372-3000 Memphis TN. The last time i had a head 'fixed' it cost me alot$$

What about the EN1300-block?? Does it go well with the EB3-head?? Or should I put the EB pistons into the EN block?? I know, I should really get Goldwing pistons....
