There's a guy near my house that's selling a '78 Civic 1200 for $1500 Cdn..he said it needs a new paint job...a completely new exhaust line, and a new engine mount..

I'm a little worried about the engine mount bit..I do plan to swap in a differnet engine, but stiil..it's something that's on my mind.

Is that too expensive? for the amount that needs to be changed I was thinking of offering $500...

exterior wise and interior it looks fine..

Paint isn't a big deal but rust is.The repair of rusted areas(correctly)can be very expensive.Look close at the floor pan and all strut towers. If you plan to do an engine swap,or not,the exhaust and motor mount are not a big deal either.$1500 might be a bit much depending on location(where are you?)Is the car registered and licensed? Here in B.C. one could expect to pay $300-$800.I think out east they sell for a little more.Good Luck!

It should only be worth over $1000 IF there's a whole bunch of new parts, and the engine is reliable. With bad engine mounts and exhaust line, you really can't tell if the motor is crap, or you do have a good one. Like the last guy said, check for rust. Take a magnet with you, see if its already bondo-ed. And you're right, with a new exhaust costing at least $250 cdn you shouldn't be giving this guy any more than $700. The things that went on my car were the rad, thermostat, fuel pump, starter, muffler, exhaust flange, head gasket, valve cover gasket, torque/stabalizer bar, headlight mounts, tie-rod ends(inner and outer), rusty struts, spark plugs, dist cap and points, dirty carb, carb/intake gasket ... check these best you can.
Hope you get a nice car,
Austen

I'm in Montreal..and so is the car being sold.

One problem is I'm in Israel until December..so I'm having a friend go over to check out the car.
