I have a 78 hatchback and it has an electric fuel pump mounted on the firewall. When I turn the key on it clicks and when I turn the key off it clicks. I have half a tank of gas, but no fuel at the electic fuel pump. Is the pump not working? Please provide some trouble shooting suggestions. Thank you.

sounds like your fuel filter is plugged up, and / or your pump is filled with junk.
pull your fuel filter (located back by the fuel tank - at least on my '79 and '81 accord that was where it was) and replace it. you'll probably baptized yourself with gas, so don't wear anything nice while you're doing it. two vice grips come in handy to clamp off the fuel lines.
next take off the gas cap.
next pull the fuel line that leaves the pump, pull the end where it goes into the carb. Put that end of the line in a glass jar (peanut butter jar works well) click on the key to the RUN position, if the pump starts up, you should start seeing fuel pumping into the jar. If no fuel, then I'd say it's time to replace the pump.
I know Puralator makes an electric fuel pump, might have a bit more pressure than you want, so you can also buy a fuel pressure regulator to control the flow.
hope this helps.

hey there ..
i have a '78 sedan, and you're lucky .. no baptism required!!
the fuel filter is on the drivers side right in the corner by the firewall ..
check it out .. it's opaque, so you may be able to see if it's gunked up by looking at it ..
they are cheap to replace, so i'd do it anyway ..
also, mke sure that the flow through the filter is correct .. (ther should be a little arrow on the filter itself)
...
could it be a problem with the diaphrgm in thepump itself?
you can pop it off easily enough .. just make sure you don't destroy the gasket, or at least have some gasket material on hand to cut yourself a new one incase ..
(make sure the rubber of the diaphragm is soft and not cracked .. of course ..)
keep us posted!!

I had a similar thing happen to me. I thought it was my pump so I replaced my pump. It wasn't my pump. It turned out to be my ignition switch. When I cranked the motor the pump would work but once I stopped cranking the pump wouldn't work anymore.
This is what I suggest:
1) replace your fuel filter (just so you know there are no physical blockages when you test your fuel pump.
2) Test your fuel pump on a reliable power source and see if you get gas.
3) If you get gas then it must be an electrical problem (I rigged up a manual switch so that I could turn my ignition on and off and all was fine).
If you don't get gas then replace your pump.
First check your electrical and then see start replacing parts. It's usually cheaper.
