i need headers.
we all need headers.
but where the heck do we find them, and within a working mans budget?
heres my idea, although it might not work.
get a set of X brand headers and cut off the exhuast flange on the engine side with a bandsaw or porta-band.
now take the stock exhaust manifold and cut off the same flange.
take a torch on low heat and heat the primaries to bend them into the place of the stock flange.
and repeat this for all 4 primaries.
then weld the primaries to the stock flange and die grind the opening to give a large exhaust flow.
will this work?
its just an idea, and i wonder if anybody has gone the custom header route and what did they do.

Kelly,
For my D16Z6 into '77 1200 project, I did have to build a custom header to get any exhaust system to fit. I wound up buying a Hedman for a '92 at my local Honda wrecker and basically cutting the thing into bits, and then my local exhaust shop made me some non-mandrel 90's and I sectioned them to fit.
Now I am not a fabricator by ANY stretch of the imagination, but I have done allot of oilfield repair work in my past, and it took me upwards of 20 hours to get this to work. Combine this with the cost of the intial header, and then the cost to jet coat, and it is upwards of CDN$450 (a custom header fabricator would be a heck of allot more expensive than my time, but it would still take approx 10 hours and the car in their shop!!). If you can use a header that has been pre-engineered, you will be WAY better off.
Incidently Justin, the car isn't fully wired yet, but hitting the key makes it crank!!! Finally, almost there!!

Oh yeah,
Just to add and item I forgot, welding carbon steel tube to a cast iron exhaust manifold would not work.
Making a flange to mate to your head could be done (laying out on say 1/4" plate, drilling and die grinding forever, but then you need someone with a REALLY good hand to weld the tube to the flange without burning through)
Have fun!!

Do the 1200's really have to come out past the front valance? What about curling up a bit (if you don't have air you have plenty of room) and going to a 4-2-1 with longer stepped primaries all meeting down by the oil pan or just below. and a flex joint from there. Or a set of longer secondaries that are larger. Since only a few of us 'race' our civics I think a 4-2-1 would suffice and a choice of coating or not (not like DC's 400.00 shit) ......This might make me use my talents to "MAKE" some and find a couple of knowlegable people to try them out and see!.....And if Oscar really want's to know... "If you make them in Mexico (right down the road..Thank you N.A.F.T.A.)People are still out there to buy them" and the 80-81 4port accord manifold fits the 80-83 civic 4port there is just that many more! (just make them shorter from the head to the firewall!)....Hey Oscar, I can send you a 4 port head????
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
There are options for Headers. The race headers come out over the front valance. the Thunderbird headers fit inside where stock exhaust fitted with a little cross member cutting.
If we find a welder that will do them for us and buy a lot, maybe we can get a deal.
There was a guy in Georgia that made them.
250.00 us
I think I will try to find him and get a bulk price on them.

Good call
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
I have a degree in welding and machine tool, and for the life of me I certainly wouldn't charge 250.00 for a set! I would rather have tens of thousands of people with my product than just a few charging out the nose! I've putzed around the idea of getiing some mandrel bent pipe from good ole JC Whitney and welding up my own. I just lost a add for a company that would lazer cut most anything. I would just send the exhaust gaskets and say a 3/8 flange from these please! And start 'burnin'...Did you ever see some of the formula 1 headers for a v10? They're all over the place! It just can't be that hard for the primaries to curl up a bit and then go down to a double joint and then under the pan to a 'ball and socket' joint to attach to a 'flow through' design. And welding aint that hard!!!!
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
The Kirk header is just some pre-bent pipes welded together. Go for it E.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Errol,
My suggestion is don't even mess with mild steel tubing. If you are going to build headers for our Hondas start with a stainless steel like #604 either 14ga or 16ga and build them to last. The difference in material cost is nothing when compared to your time and energy. The only other hassle is stainless is a little trickier to deal with, but you know that...don't you. I once owned a Cosworth Vega which came factory with stainless tubular headers...you still see them for sale...in excellant condition today, and those cars are 15 or 16 years old!
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
I'd be interested in a pre-fab weld in roll cage.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
It would also be a good idea to put on a flexible flange joint like the newer hondas and acuras have, it would make the car alot smoother without the vibration carrying through the exhaust. We all know that our little engines are notoriuus for vibration. You could even make some with sockets for the air-injection tubes so those with smog concerns can keep that. Tony T.

just got a Headman Headers catalog, and they sell a 'box of bends' (havn't priced them yet!) and got a "B" pipe from what looks like a accord or civic. I've also got a stock 'header' from a late acccord that I think I'll be able to use the 'y's' from and the flanges. I'll try and use a 'bracket' to mount to two of the oil pan bolts on the backside of the pan to the B pipe.

Errol,
If you could do this for a 1200, could you do it for a 1500? I have a 75 cvcc, I've looked everwhere for headers and keep hearing, "they don't make them and they never have." My local muffler shop quoted me 800 bucks for a custom set, not bad considering just buying a new stock exhaust manifold is 850. But i'd be very interested in something like this if it could be had for a reasonable price. Mike

Mike; check the previous posts, I can't remember the name but someone had one for sale or trade? Oh... (they're full of poopy dookie) I bought a set from Nopi a couple of yeas back, and S&S said that they still could make some. (S&S headers)

The picture posting instructions need A LOT OF WORK. Can I emphasize that A LOT OF WORK.
Anyway, I'm interested in some fender flares similar to the one's on the Datsun in the above post. Has anybody ever tried to graft the flares from different vehicles to the Civics? I was wondering about like VW rabbit flares molded to the body with fiberglass, or other similar cars. Just curious.

Ah, the 510. My first car.
That one is a looker.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Are you serios Ted? My first car was a 1967 Datsun 411, a peppy little four door. My second car was a 1969 Datsun 510, Then a 1978 Datsun P/U. HOW DID I EVER GET MIXED UP WITH OLD HONDA'S???
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Talkin about first cars....hmmmm i remember the days....70' AAR cuda with a 426hemi....Maverick Grabber(302)...67' Dart Gt...87' National...81' Gutless cutlass, A few Caravans, and then it started...First honda was a 77' hatch...and since then i've had over 17 of them!!
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Well, my first car was a 1976 Honda Civic two door trunk model. My mom bought it new in 76 and I got it when I was 16 (way back in 85). I've owned at least one first gen since then.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Here you go... good for a laugh!
that's me in 1978 with my 510. Dig the hair!
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Now there's a picture that belongs on a t-shirt! You looked absolutely stoked!
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
ahaha, that's too funny. I remember my first car was an old beat up 57' Chevy Bel Air two-door station wagon. Now that was a cool car. It was slammed and had really horrible paint. Total cholo-mobile. Ey, vato!!!
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
You want VATO...
I'll give you VATO!!
That's me in my 63 Chevy 4 door Bel-Air, I think this was taken in the early '80s. How did we ever wander so far...

Rick:
I can't regonize that was you with the datsun 510.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Rick, your funky doo is classic. Do you still listen to the Tower of Power? LOL That's a pretty clean 510. Was it stock?
I seem to like the japanese vehicles the best. Here's the list of bikes and cars I've owned and price paid. I have never sold a vehicle for less than I paid. I have never owned a new vehicle:
1972: Mini-bike with 3 hp Briggs & Straton, front suspension and rear drum brake. $40 bucks.
1976: '75 Kawasaki 125 Enduro $350
1977: '67 Chevy Camero RS Convertible. Free
1978: '70 Dodge Power Wagon 200 4 door truck. $600
1978: '76 Yamaha 125 Enduro $250
1979: '76 Yamaha RD350 Road Bike $450
1979: '76 Honda 550F Road Bike $650
1980: '69 Datsun PL510. 4 door $240
1984: '75 Chevy Nova with 350 4-bolt main. 2 door $500.
1986: '82 VW Rabbit 2 door $600
1988: '78 Honda CB250 road bike $150
1990: '79 Toyota PU Long Bed Free
1998: '92 Honda Civic DX 4 door $2,300
2000: '95 Honda Odyssey Minivan $14,000 (still paying)

Jacob:
Forgive us- we tend to go off on tangents. (But you gotta admit, those pictures of Rick are sweet!)
I bought some 510 flares for my Civic, and if they ever arrive I'll let you know how the install goes. I thought about VW flares m'self, but decided against them because I think the new/raw flares will be easier to shape. (And I don't want my Honda to look like a Vdub.) If you can't wait, and you happen to decide to go with Showcars-bodyparts for your flares, (they're in the links), then be forewarned that they are veeeerry slooooooow! It's been over a month since they received my payment for the flares. When and if I ever reach a human when I call, I get the very distinct impression that "they will sell no bodykits before their time". They're always really polite and helpful- but I've seen paint dry faster.
Anyway, when the flares arrive, I'll post some info and maybe some pics. Good luck!
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
I won't be doing the flare thing for a lot of months. I've just always got ideas running through my head and I figure I'd better get them on paper(?) before I forget. I always like hearing other peoples thoughts on it too.

I can,t even remember all the cars I had. Before I was 16 I owned 27 cars. My very first street legal car was a 68 Mustang (ahhhh those were the days). Street cars That are road worthy that I have now are:
1) 98 Tahoe
2) 94 Merc Marquis
3) 89 Celebrity (winter beater)
4) 88 Civic (My first new car and it has 430,000 kms on it and still runs strong with no rebuild)
5) 75 Civic 1200
6) 74 V8 Vega
7) and a bunch of parts cars.
The car I miss the most and was an awsome car. It was my 1968 GT 390 Fastback Mustang. I wish I had a dollar for every time I said "dang I wish I had not sold that car".

Back to Headers.. I found a guy here at work that has a very good friend that is going to water cut the 1200's flanges. (within .003 tolerence) Instead of one bar going across, It's going to be a dedicated flange-tube for the primaries and then going down to a accord 4-2 with a bracket to attach to the oil pan and then the rest of the accord 2-1 with a flexable knuckle for your 'cat'
He does more aluminum than steel, so I'm going to see if he can make a RADICAL intake flange for me to use a pair of side drafts and keep the stock dist/dizzy. Don't worry I'll keep ya posted
