Cleanest, easiest, bolts in without mods is the 81 Accord 1600 EL.Gives a HP gain of about 20% over stock. It's not exactly a monster motor but you will notice a big improvement.I would also recommend an 82-83 Accord 5spd to go with it.The nice thing about this swap is it can be easily done in a weekend and won't break the bank.

I have an 84 Accord 1800 w/5 spd sitting on my floor that looks like a bolt-in as well. It's the 12valve motor. I think it's the same deal as the Prelude twin carb (which I have a set of new carbs for) motor.

I have done the EL engine swap in a civic before. Pretty much a no-brainer, besides the upper mount and flywheel mods.

Isn't an 82-83 accord 5 spd a hydralic rather than cable? Anyway, I don't know if the performance increase over the 1500 wagon motor is worth the trouble.

If the 84 accord motor fits, I'll slide the duals on it for now and then source a FI 2L Prelude motor. Now we're talking....

Take care
Shawn

The 82-83 Accord 5spd has a cable operated clutch. With this tranny and the 81 1600 EL the performance increase is very noticable. This combo drops in without any mods!I am not 100% on this but I think the 79 1.5 EC is 68hp,the 81 1.6 EL is 80hp,the 84 1.8 ES is 86hp and the 86 2.0 BT is 110hp.Anyhow,just more food for thought.Good luck with whatever swap you choose.

How much heavier is the 81 EL 1600 with 82/83 gearbox setup you're talking about, than the stock 1200 and gearbox? Does the suspension need steroids?

the EN 1500 out of a wagon as it has a good 5sp box, it bolts straight in apart from the top engine mount and the sump needs grinding to stop it hitting on the bottom, there is a reasonable power gain, and in New Zealand, you wouldn't have to pay big $$$ to have the conversion certified as the engines look exactly the same - also the EN motors are more reliable with the better oil feed and a stronger camshaft.
