I know this has been discussed at length but I am about to part with $A300 to purchase an 81 ENI 5 speed manual gearbox to fit to my 74 EB1.

My Honda man is telling me the clutch plate may need changing. I thought the conversion was simply a bolt off bolt on exercise without touching the clutch.

Can somebody please confirm this?

Jim

hey there ..
the en1 has a deeper dish on the fly wheel ..
however, you should be able to use the flywheel and clutch assembly from the eb1 with the 5 speed gearbox ..
it's an easy thing to do.
just make sure you have it right before putting i back in!!

Hi Jim,

You should be able to buy an entire 81 civic for $300. I would use the EN flywheel and clutch if I had the option. However it will work with the EB flywheel and clutch, but it gives better clutch feel with the EN parts. You will also find that you may need to fiddle a bit with the cluch cable bracket (between the EN and EB bracket and cables you will come up with a solution)

When I swapped to an EN 5 speed, all I did was drop the 4 spd out and bolt up the 5spd. I had to file about 2mm off the gearbox edge of the bracket because it was fouling on the casing and the bolt wouldn't start. I've had no problems with the clutch so I don't see why you would need the EN parts if you didn't have them.

Thanks everyone.

I have already got the box and will proceed with the changeover shortly.

Be aware the tranny is correct, I just ran into a big problem with the tranny swap for my '76, 1.6L, 5spd Civic. I have a '78 Accord 1.6L with a blown close ratio 'GN' 5spd. My problem developed when I went and pulled another 'GN' tranny from A-part Autowrecking and after I had the tranny in I discovered it was not a 5 spd but a 'GN tagged 4 spd. That was a piss off, now I have to pull another tranny. I have found another one and it is tagged 'GN' and is a 5 spd, so it would seem that the tag will not always id the tranny. My mistake for not going through the gears before I pulled the first tranny.
