I have a set of four 15" american racing mags. They're sweet...I'll get a pic up soon...
they have 4 lugnut holes so they should fit on fine...but I was wondering about the size...15"! Most civic rims are 13". would the best bet be to get some lower profile tires?

depends on the offset hopefully it's a 42mm on a 15x6 rim. On my wagon i ran some crx wheels with 195/60/14's and then went to SIR wheels with the factory 195/55/15's and they didn't rub and it's lowered 2 1/2"'s i now have 195/45/15's on the SIR wheels. I have put 17's on a 78 hatchback(but the car sat a stock height)..all depends on the offset. Justin

k...thanks man!!
more knowledge for my pitiful brain...

justin said they could be "42mm"...
I have pics...I just haveta develope them and scan em...

14 inches in diameter, 6 inches wide most 14" are 42-45mm offset(perfect for honda's)aslong as it is the right bolt pattern!!

Does anyone know the bolt pattern of Ford Pintos? I found a Pinto with some cool looking slot style mags. I'm gonna get 'em if they're 4x100. Anyone (I know someone here is familiar with Fords) know if they are?
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
how do I measure whether the bolt patern is 4X100 or 4X120?
like I know it would be 4 holes and each are either 100mm or 120mm apart...but wher to where do I measure? the center of one hole to another?
when I measure it like this right now from the center of one hole to the center of another beside it...it reads 80mm...
but from the farthest edge of one hole to the farthest edge of the hole beside it it reads 100mm!!
hehe...but I bet this isn't how to measure it...
or would I measure across?

these mags, coincidently, look exactly the same as will payne's old red civic with the flames and louvers...
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
You're darn lucky, I love those mags. I even had a set but they were 4x114.3mm which is something round in inches!! The way you are measuring is correct; diagonally from hole to hole.. I'm pretty sure yours are 4x100...
BTW: offset is the distance from the side of the rim to the heart where it is fitted to the car!

Eric, I have an old book called How To Make Your Car Handle, by H.P. Books. It list several different cars with typical bolt patterns for factory sizing. 1971-1975 Pinto's are 4 1/4" which is 108.5 mm. The only cars listed that are 4-bolt by 100 mm are all rear wheel drive. BMW 1600 & 2002, older Mazda, & Opel.

So what else is 4X120?

jms- Nothing on this list. Sorry! It is an old book though (1978)

man I just had that dang 4X120 problem resolved! the way to get wheels to fit your car? do a hub upgrade to anything later generation honda with 4X100, front hubs off of any second generation civic pretty much directly bolt on and there are quite a few that require little to no ingenuity on the rear as well then if you're not too terribly picky go to a junkyard and have a honda mag heyday, or volkswagen or audi or acura or mazda or BMW, most of those are 4x100, I know this probably isn't much help but it works and is not all that hard and depending on your tastes you can get a set of salvaged wheels for friggin cheap unless you've got your heart set on something in a catalogue, but while you're at it you can do a pretty fatty brake upgrade

Mate, the 4x100 and big brake conversion has been covered SO MANY TIMES IT'S NOT FUNNY!! Do some searches, you'll find exactly how to do it explained again and again ...

Not really related to the previously covered topics, but it was a wheel post so:
Has anybody ever tried to have panasports or minilites redrilled with the 4X120 pattern? I've been looking at them, and they have enough space (what with 8 spokes) to drill a 4X120 pattern 45 degrees out of phase of the original pattern. Much like a lot of new rims have dual bolt patterns on them. There's quite a lot of minilite/panasport wheels that go through ebay in the 13-14" range.
Just curious

Jacob, good question. Cool show called Junk Yard wars on the learning channel had two teams build hill climbers last week, and the wheels one team chose had the wrong bolt pattern, so they torched new holes! Wish it were that easy.

Ok, the wheel question has been covered as well; but since I went through the same thing you're going through, allow me to share the benefit of my experience.
You will not find 4X120mm wheels on anything but first gen. Hondas or older Australian Mazdas. Don't mess with Pintos or Saabs or Subaru-- they WILL NOT FIT. I'm just trying to save you a lot of time and headaches here, but keep plugging away at this if you simply must see for yourself. If you have to have 14 inch or 15 inch mags, get yourself to a good used wheel yard and pick up a set and get them re-drilled. (Hear that? It's the sound of your bank account emptying...). Don't want to spend money on re-drilling? Phone calls to Australian wrecking yards aren't THAT expensive, right? And shipping companies would love to have your business! (...drip drip drip goes the money down the drain...). Here's a thought! Why not buy your wheels new from one of the repudable manufacturers! There are even some in Australia who know exactly what will fit! (...the drip now sounds like a toilet flushing...) But what sort of rubber will you be running? What off-set best suits your particular application? Are you prepared to pay premium shipping costs? (...aaand there goes the rest of your money.)
Oh, and wasting the salesperson's time is a biiiig no no.
As Justin so kindly pointed out, offset is the key to making any of your wheel set-ups work. 15's can be great- but no low profile tire in the world is going to compensate for an incorrect off-set. Sure, you can cut your fenders or use spacers all day long, but pretty soon you've only managed to screw yourself.
Unless you are ready to spend serious money, stick with stock Honda wheels and good tires. Trust me on this one, your car will still handle just fine.
Take it from me, dude, this is one of those times when it pays to listen to your elders.
And speaking of which, KEYWORD SEARCH.
Learn it.
Use it.
Love it.

Natcho, that might have been a little harsh, or mabye I'm a bit sensitive from the flame I got on PHAX. The issue is, Jacob, that as the tire diameter increases, the inside point that the tire rubs against will not be the strut casing but rather the spring or spring perch. When that diameter is reached, you need a huge offset. Keep plugin'.

I couldn't decide if I was offended or not. What was that a reply to anyway? Zippy did you mean tire diameter? I don't want a larger tire diameter, just a slightly larger wheel (lower profile tires with 13's or 14's) so I can actually buy decent tires. I like the big wheel thing too.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
I didn't mean to sound harsh, but on the re-read I realized that I most certainly could have. My apologies to Jacob and anybody else I might have offended.
I didn't want a larger tire diameter when I did my wheel shopping either- just wheels big enough to fit over my brake kit, and bigger contact patch from my tires. My bitterness wasn't directed at you, Jacob, just at the whole process in general. In retrospect, I suppose all that bile didn't need to be in the post. I was serious about wanting to prevent you from going down the same road I did, though, and that's why I harped about the keyword search. I bugged the hell out of the folks on this board for months about my wheel search, and it's all there in pixels for your amusement.
I run 14's and Yokahama tires now, but I will have to cut and flare my wheel-wells because I didn't pay enough attention to off-set when I ordered my wheels. It has been an expensive headache, to say the least, and I'm still not done. Hope your wheel search works out for the best.
