I talked with our Japanese friend about the RS Civic and found this out. The EB1-1xxxx is a standard Civic. The EB1-5xxxx is a GL block and the EB1-7xxx is the RS. He says there is no difference between the RS and GL blocks. Both have the same piston and comp. ratio, and head. The difference is in the cam, carbs and exhaust. My curiosity was peaked when I was going through my junk last night and found I have 3 Japanese short blocks.

Can you find out what the specs on the camshaft are?

Hey John,
That info is somewhere here on the board, but I don't remember which thread. If memory serves, the GL cam has stock lift and 10 degrees more duration, and the RS has stock lift with 15 degrees more duration. Also on that particular thread there is info on what's stamped on the cam for identification. Something else I noticed about the RS/GL blocks is the baffled oil pan. Very nice.

Hi Fellas,
Was the GL something special in the states?
It's just that I think that 2 of my 1200's are designated GL, that refers to the body/transmission combination though, didn't think it was related to engine specs...?

We never had a GL or RS here in the states. The GL did have a peppier version of the 1200. I'm sure, as you stated, there are other differences.

Thanks Todd,
This I must investigate.....I always swore my 1169cc went better than my 1238cc!! It definitely does now anyway, since the camshaft out of the 1238 is sitting on my desk next to me!
(minus all of the teeth on the oil pump drive gear that is..)
John B
P.S. What do you mean by a baffled oil pan??

Sorry John, I've been trying to answer your post for a few days. The baffles are basically a piece of sheet metal welded in the pan to keep the oil on the pickup during hard cornering. The normal 1200s have this baffle on one side, but the RS has the baffles on both.
