Has anybody installed one of these? Which one is recommended? I have MSD 6A but I want to get rid of my points too. I would like to just get one kit that does it all any suggestions on make's and model's?

I have a 1.6L Accord engine in my '76 Civic that originally came with points. I replaced this with the electronic distributor and module from a new Civic, it was an easy conversion, just power and ground. I have to thank 2low2go for his help with the wiring. There may be a distributor from a new 1.3L that is electronic that will bolt on. I would hit the autowreckers and start hunting. I also have an MSD6AL in my car from my drag-racing days but dont think its worth anything on the stock engine.

i put a MSD6A in my 1200 and it smoothed out the idle big time. even with the old plugs. but after i did a full tune up, it ran even better. just my 2 pennies...i also hear that the 1300 elec. distributor bolts right in, with a wire splice.

How true is this? What year of civic can I pull the elec. distbutor from that would bolt right into my 79 1200. Who has had else has had experience with this?

The easy way to covert to electronic ignition in with a Pertonix conversion. I have one on my civic and have done the conversion on other old cars at my work many times. They are more reliable than the points they replace, make sure you replace your coil at the same time though as the old OEM coils seemed to fail soon after the conversion was done. This unit can be used alone or to trigger a MSD.
Ps you have to use two hold down plates with the 1300 distributor cause its longer. I recomend the Pertonix over this swap.

I agree with Don, the Pertronix set-up is much more reliable than the stock points. When we did these conversions at our shop, we joked that we wouldn't be seeing that car as much in the future! And we were right!
P.S. the '80 1300 dist. does not have vacuum advance (only retard w/cold) so it should be changed to mechanical only & re-curved.

Where can a person get a "Pertronix" set-up?

This has been covered before...the distributer from an EN1(1335) or EJ will fit and work with very slight mods. The electronics are self contained in the dist. and are very reliable.

Yes, my local yard had an EN1 with brand new cables, cap and rotor, so I snagged the dizzy, the coil and parts for only $45.00, the price Don pays for WHOLE CARS! Make sure the dizzy is tight (no play) and that the rubber seal is not cracked.

You can get the Pertonix from Summit racing or other parts wholesalers. I think they run about 79.00
Ted thats $10 more than I paid for my 73 :)

I used to be able to get replacement bushings for loose distributors from a company called Winzer. You just drove them out & pressed the new ones in then honed to the right clearance.

Try winzerusa.com
I haven't done business with them for several years, so I don't know if they still have these.

Does anyone know if you can use the PerTronix flame-thrower 40,000 volt epoxy coil with internal resistor in the 1200?

Yeah it should work.

I think coils can be interchanged in almost any vehicle. Coils take 12 volts and step it up to thousands to make a spark for the spark plug. Any car that uses 12 volts and spark plugs should have a coil that will work in the Civic.

I have put on about 200 of these pertonix electronic conversions on different cars at work and about 80% of the ones who did not spend the money on a good coil came back on a hook within 3 months. The Pertonix conversion pulls more amps and if your coil is not in top shape it will give up. Of course you could play the odds, and you may be in the 20% :)
I have used the pertonix coils and the other performance coils, with the conversions. There are some coils that are too low of resistance (e-core) and will cause problems. Read the instructions with your conversion.
