Well, yesterday I totaled my pickup. '94 Isuzu 187,000 mi. Obviously, I need a new one. The only problem is that I have no idea of what to get. Half the rednecks I know say the Ranger is a piece of crap and the other half say the S-10 is junk. Unfortunately, after owning a Dodge Stratus I am very reluctant to get into another American car at all. And my rental Chevy Malibu isn't restoring my confidence. On the other hand there aren't that many choices in foreign trucks. Isuzu no longer has a pickup and Toyota is sooo expensive. I need good gas mileage, stick shift, 2-wd, enough mass to tow Zippy(the Isuzu just barely cut it), an extended cab, and a full size bed. Looking forward to great suggestions from the best motor heads I know.

Thanks, Roger

Mazda or Nissan are alright but your best bet is a Toyota. You get what you pay for!Find yourself a 94 (or 97 if you can afford one)with the V-6.Or how about this!hopicup

I have a 89 Toyota PU with the 22R, It tows my civic and the custom car trailer (low, light, and just a little longer than my civic) up hills just fine. If you read the owners manual the V-6 only increases the towing weight a couple hundred pounds. The Toy automatics reduce the towing weight lots so look for a manual.

ABSOLUTLY! A Toyota pickup! mid 80's or a late 80's fuel injected one. Easy to work on and RELIABLE! Goood engine to. Lots of after market parts.

I agree, 22R is the way to go. Hope you didn't total Roger as well...

My 22R engine racked up over 264K on it. Sold the truck for 500 bucks so I could buy the 74 civic.

The Honda is a great looking truck, but it dosent appear to have the towing capacity I'm looking for. Roger is just fine and so is the '86 Chevy Van I met. Based on my recent experience I would highly recommend one to anybody considering the purchase of an old van. I will consider your clear rave reviews for the old Toyo but I'm looking for somthing a bit lower maintenance (i.e. newer, say <50k mi).

Roger, I'm confused???
On the first post, you stated that Toyotas are too expensive, but then you stated that you want somthing under 50K, that equals $$$$
Just for the record, my Toyota cost me about 2K with a new paint job, tires and used Boyd wheels, it has over 150 lbs compression at 170K and I drive it daily (new timing chain and valve job are in the works as safety items) . Even made the trip down to Charles R's and back with a bed full of parts no problem. It just took some trading with my friends and some work. That is the good thing about old toy's parts are everywhere.

Yes,the 22R is a great stove.I have owned several Toys (78,82,87,89,92,94,97)The 82 had 550,000km on it when I sold it!I currently drive a 92 extra cab 4x4 5spd V-6 big tire pack(97,000km).It is by far the best one yet!I bought it in May for 16,500 cdn.Shop around and find yourself one, they are out there!86 chevy van?Sounds like your slippin to the Darkside.

Roger,

Where are you located?? Up here in Alberta, I come across used rig trucks quite often and great deals can be had.

On the private market, deals can also be had at this time of year. I just picked up a 90 Dakota 4x4 for CDN$ 1800!!

dodge (doj), n., 1. Being on a first name basis with the repair shop.

Chevy 2.8 V6, great mileage, can't pull itself up a hill.
4.3L V6 165-210hp (350 minus 2 cylinders), great motor (emphasis).
Power: great
gas mileage: mediocre.

Ford 2.8-3.0 V6, can't stand Ford's, but nonetheless a great set of motors. Very powerful (for a V6, compared to GM 2.8) dependable and pretty good mileage.

Toyota 22RE and 3.0-3.4 V6 (190 ponies). Great motors, run forever. The V6 doesn't get any better mileage than the Chevy or Ford, but may run longer. By the sounds of your situation, I'd find a 22RE with a 5 spd and call it good.

Ever thought about the mid to late '80's Isuzu Turbo Diesel?

Hey Roger.

I've got an 99 Isuzu Rodeo with auto, V6, 4WD. The power train is GREAT with gobs of power! It can tow up 4500lbs. I also love the way it handles. I'd search on ebay! I'm still the ebay freak. :) I constantly see good from NJ.

When I said Toyotas are expensive I was thinking about older trucks. I just assumed the price jump(as compared to other brands) held up in new trucks. I just figured that a new Toyo was 25% more than another truck. Pleasantly, I am wrong. In my search, I've found that I feel good about Toyo and Nissan. Now I just need to decide on what price range I want to get. I can't tell you how I value all your input. If I get an older truck it will definately be a 22R or an Isuzu (I loved that truck). Darrel, you say that ebay is a good source eh. I'll keep my eyes open.

Thanks, Roger

By the way, I think automatic transimissions are preferred for towing. You don't want to burn your clutch.

Isn't an Isuzu Hombre the same as a Chevy S-10?Just like Mazda and Ford.

They look similar but nothing interchanges, not the engine, body... nothing. Two totally separate trucks

My 1979 Chevy Luv 4x4 had a Isuzu engine.I don't think the Dakota even comes close to a Toyota.

Our 1998 Isuzu Hombre 4X4 is a Chevy S-10 with Isuzu nametags on it. We even get parts and service from the local Chevy dealer, who also sells Isuzus, and also admits the pickups are the same.
A great pickup, lots of use in 4X4 mode, no troubles EXCEPT for the lousy wimpy emergency brakes, which are small drums on this all-disc brake vehicle. If you forget to release the emerg. brake and put about 100 yards on it, it is TOAST, and costs a couple hundred to repair... and parts costs are FRIGHTFUL for these brakes. Had to do it twice in the last year. You can adjust the emergency brake cable tension but it will NOT hold the truck while in neutral unless the brake shoes are brand new. Bah. It is a sweet truck otherwise though.

I heard that Isuzu has it's own factory. I heard the Honda Passport comes off the same assembly line as the Rodeo, but Honda puts their name tag on it and charges thousands more. Recently Honda has been playing catch-up with the RAV-4 and other models. I read all that on a Honda Hater's web site.

I haven't had any problems with my E-brake.

That's what I thought.A buddy of mine owns an 98 Hombre and it appears to be the same as a S-10.I read in Motortrend that Honda was going to build engines for the Chevy S-10.Why does'nt Honda just build a truck? That would be SWEET!!

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Jacob (208.147.86.204) on Wednesday, December 26, 2001 - 06:41 pm:

Newer Hombre=S-10. Everything's interchangable, even the front clip, which is the only difference. The bad part is that the Hombre is not offered with the larger horsepower motors you can get in the S-10.

Chevy Luv is the same thing as an Isuzu. I had a friend with an Isuzu Diesel, and one with a Chevy Luv. Identicle.

Please for the love of god save yourself from buying a Mopar (Dakota). You'll probably be able to buy two or three Toyota's by the time you get done fixing it.

Sadly, we're all on the same page re: American. I found a green (my color) Nissan Frontier King Cab, 2wd, 4-cyl, with 500 mi on it. The owner broke his hip and had to get an auto trans. I paid 5% below invoice for an essentially new truck. Seems like a pretty good deal. Actually, I really enjoy driving it and it will be alot better for towing Zippy than my old one.

Thanks for all of your advice, Roger
