I have just finished removing the motor from my EB2,to find all the bearings (mains and bigends) are all worn right through to the copper.these were after-market bearing shells fitted only 70000 km ago.The crankshaft looks to be in average condition, just wondering wheather to fit new ones or to abandon the idea completely and wreck the car.Does anyone know how much a set of bearing shells(main and bigend} is going to cost me.I am in New Zealand.

The factory Honda bearings are select-fit which means they come in different thickness' denoted by color. I believe the "green" bearings are the thickest. You could get a couple from your dealer & try it on each journal by measuring with "plastiguage" if you have the crank out of the block. If the clearance is too much on any of the journals then your only choices would be to replace the crank or have it re-ground & find some oversize bearing shells. Aftermarket bearings are generally on the thick side & a little softer than stock so they break in good but don't last as long. They are relatively cheap here in the US probably $30-35 for a set of mains from BAP. you can spin them in without removing the crank by bending a cotter pin into a "T" & fitting it in the oil hole & just rotate the new ones in. This is what I would do 1st, $35 for bearings, $15 for gasket & some oil & it might last another 70K km.

All very well, but Honda cranks are not really regrindable, you'll have trouble finding oversize bearings (Honda don't make them), and the whole exercise doesn't make sense economically. You're better off finding a decent second hand crank, which shouldn't be hard considering how durable they are, and getting the correct size Honda bearings. Most of the aftermarket bearings only come in one size thus don't really fit properly.

yep, my all three of my Honda workshop manuals have the bearing color code charts to compare agains the stampings on the crank. If you need them let me know and I can scan them in and mail you. I'm sure if you need a newused crank, one of the doods on this board can get one for you, if you can't find one yourself.

many thanks for all your advise re the bearing &crank dont want to waste money & time,i will let you know how i go i think price will be prohibitive for after marketbearing anyway.
