I can't seem to post messages under my usual name.

Is anybody else having problems?

Hey Darrell. It seems to be working now. I'm not sure what the problem was.

Have you ever seen that TV show where Larry has two brothers named Darrell and Darrell?

People think I should watch the show just because my name is Darrell. I never liked it though.

Thanks,
Darrell --Maryland--

Hi there,

Haven't seen the show here. Unusual to see the same spelling. Last job I was at there were three other Daryl's (etc.) They were nick named D1, D2 & D3 to simplify things.
This board is magic. I thought I was a lone Civic lover, but was amazed at how widespread their popularity is. I have worked on nearly every nut and bolt on the car since I've had it. I think the Japanese Engineer who did the design was brilliant. Especially when I worked on other cars (I won't mention the various BMC cars that turn you into a patient, skilled mechanic needing Inspector Gadget dexterity to do the simplest task). Many things I wanted to look into on the Honda are answered on this board.

Cheers,

Darrell (Oz)

Darrell - from Oz

Have you tried taking out a EB series dash unit. It certainly test your dexterity. You need another pair of hands and extra spanners!!!

Hi Jim,

Yeah, I started pulling out my heater core, but decided to leave it for when I can have the car off the road for more than an afternoon, the removal list for access started to look ominous. My praise of the engineering was more for the mechanical side of things. The engine components, subframe, suspension, steering assembly etc. all came apart nicely. I find the engine fun to work on, a bit like a big toy. I suppose a lot is because things are on the smallish side and not too difficult to handle by yourself. The electrical wiring is a bit disappointing. It is a bit under nourished and lacks relays on some functions. I noted with interest comments on this board about overheating fuses etc. I also put relays on the headlights as suggested on the board. This cured the hot fusebox and gave me fuller voltage at the headlamps & much brighter lights. By the way I am located just south of Wollongong. Wonder where you are?

Cheers,
Darrell Oz

Getting the dash out is a piece of cake. A dozen or so bolts and a few wires ... easy.
To get the heater unit out involves undoing (from memory) three bolts, 3 screws and two hose clamps. You don't need to remove the dash to get the heater out.

You must be a lot younger than I. Because my neck usually gives in when you have to get into that position of laying half on the seat and half on the floor to look up under the dash. Or am I not doing it right??

Darrell

I live in Sydney

I have trouble getting my head back far enough to get in focus under the dash.
Jim, can you recommend any wreckers around Sydney for EB1 parts? Bit scarce down this way. Have been checking Ebay, Trading post etc. & advertising on local ISP board. Mainly need a speedo but also after a 5 spd box eventually.

Darrell

I bought a complete EB1 dash for $40 from Pick & Payless at Blacktown in Sydney. My original speedo - the milage numbers stopped working years ago. Just yesterday I dropped the replacemet dash into General Instruments at Lidcombe to have the speedo wound back and to have the gauges tested before I install it.

Two months ago I also purchased a 82 civic 5speed box from them for $300. I thought it was dear but I asked to take it from a very clean EB1 car they had at the time. It is installed now and I am real happy as I haven't lost any power ( in fact the car goes much better second gear is great) It fits with no modifications.

On the highway the 5th gear is great. Rev's drop down and I'm not worried as much as before. I'm in the process now of fitting a tacho.

I was at Pick & payless last week and at present they have no EB1,2 or 3 in the yard. This could change though but I agree they are getting scarce.

They however have later civic 5spd boxes.

Regards Jim

Thanks for the info, I'll make some enquiries up that way. My speedo has done the same, again, KP/H is ok but not KMS. Had the same problem years back and replaced speedo before. Winding back is fairly easy. The frame can be gently distorted apart enough (by hand) to allow the digits to freewheel. I put the last speedo back to 0 when I did rings/bearings and replaced a clutch (1990). Back to 94k now and have just done rings/bearings/head again, the oil rings were shot and had a couple of crook valves. Replaced two head gaskets over the 94k period and two CV's, otherwise mainly consumables ie. exhausts and brakes etc. Had a shop do the head this time and the mechanic checked my bore and clearances incase I was over the limit. He said it was still well within specs for it age. Does't matter with the 99k limit on the speedo, as far as misrepresenting the mileage as you coud be many times around the clock anyway. I reckon the little donk has gone ok, considering. I'm a fanatic about keeping my oil clean and halve the usual change periods. I had a vastly contrasting run with my EA Ford. Tried to treat it like a Honda and stand by it. But, if it turns, vibrates, pumps, sucks, seals, generates, moves or is made of metal or plastic, I reckon I have replaced it on my EA. Darrell - Maryland has a site link on the board to someone who had probs with a Ford Taurus. Twas interesting reading.

Cheers for now.
