Hi!

I'm trying to get my 1979 Civic 1200 on the road and the carb is giving me some trouble. The car only has 85000 original Km on it and has been sitting for about 8 years. It starts right away and idles great but when you try to accelerate quickly it stalls. It does rev up if you accelerate slowly. Its only when you "snap" the throttle. It has new gas and fuel filter installed. I also changed the fuel tank cuz the original was finished. I'm guessing it just needs to be taken appart and cleaned out. I dont know if it matters but its a Hondamatic. (For now anyway) Also, does anyone know what the white plastic adjuster screw on the back of the carb is for? I havent touched it..

Thanks!

Carburators have an accelorator pump just for that. It might be malfunctioning.

If the accelorator is pressed rapidly, the accelorator pump squirts fuel into the manifold. If the accelorator is pressed slowly the pump isn't needed because the increased vacuum will eventually suck the fuel and air it needs without the use of the pump.

Here's what my manual says...
Operate the throttle lever or accelerator pump lever, and watch the accelerator jet in the primary barrel. As the accelerator pump is slowly depresssed, a consistent squirt of petrol should come into the primary barrel for thewhole of the pump plunger travel. If the ejection of the fuel is spasmodic, it may be due to cloging, or a devective accelerator pump piston. The amount of fuel ejected by the pump may be altered by transferring the operating rod to the alternative hole in the pump operating lever.

In other words...You she see if it's working or not by looking down the carburator. You can check it when the car is off, but you don't want to flood the engine.

The pump can be located on the carburator. You should see a shaft and a small rubber boot move as you open and close your accelerator.

Hope that fixes your problem,
Darrell

Thanks for the help. Its a Kehin modle. I took the carb off and cleaned it the best I could with spray carb cleaner then blew it out with compressed air. Put it back on and the problem is still there... The accelerator pump looks to be working. Could there be another reason?? Float level maybee or even a timing issue? This problem is not as bad when the choke is on. I only see fuel beeing sprayed out of one barrel of the carb even when I rev it way up. Normal? What is the BEST way to clean up the carb body and components anyway? A mechanic friend of mine said to completely take it appart then put it in boiling watter for a while. Sounds nuts but I do remember seeing something similar a long time ago at a carb rebuild shop. I would prefer to fix it myself this time though.

When your choke is on, the carb puts a richer mixture in the carb. You can try adjusting your carb to make it richer. I used to adjust it until it ran better.

It might do a little better with if you slightly advance your timing, but I think you should stick to your carb first since it goes away with the choke.

Have a good one,
Darrell

have a look at the condition of the points, they might be 22 years old. also gap.
a friends VW shortwheelbase buggy would stall if you accel'd half an inch of pedal more than what you were cruising at. a change of points, and the thing was doing wheelstands in the dirt! the power increase was amazing.

I've had a little experience with the same problem.
First off, if you want to clean the carb. Water (even boiling) is NOT the way to go in my opinon. Use gasoline. Take the carb (whole or in pieces) and let it sit in a bucket of gasoline overnight. Even scrub it with a brush in the gas if you like. Gas and other methol alcohols are great cleaners, since they disolve the dirt and grime. Water won't do that at all.
When its all together and back on the car, the items you must adjust include the mixture screw, the float level and turning the distributor a notch. You'll have to consult some mechanics or your manual for specifics on this, but those are the items you have to adjust.
Hope it runs.

Sounds like the float needle valve is bad or is not adjusted correctly. I really dont know anything about the CVCC personally. I finally got my car to run right just the other day. Ended up beeing bad points.. No kidding. The carb was in need of a good cleaning though. I am finding that the Hondamatic tranny has to go and the 5 speed has to go in.. Soon.
