I have a standard 1st gen four speed gearbox and works fine when i first start the car but when the gearbox warms up after about 20 to 30 min of driving it starts to crunch when changing gear. It does this for all gears except for the 3rd to 4th shift and when i take off in first it shunts back and fourth like i am bunny hoping. I have a new thurst bearing, clutch plate and clutch cable.

I have no idea what could be causing this if anybody has any ideas please leave a measege or email at cjlthomas@hotmail.com.

just a thought, could it have anything to do with the gearbox oil? I am use a standard gearbox oil 80-90 weight i think i heard these boxs are ment to run on engine oil, could this be causing my problem?

You DO NOT use gearbox oil in these gearboxes, it's simply too thick. They are designed to use 10-40 or so engine oil. Drain out the syrup you have in there and stick the proper stuff in.

Cheers Civic guru. Oil is changed to Magnatec 10-40, we'll see how that goes on our 39C day in sunny Adelaide tomorrow.

Many thanks

Chris

I changed the oil but i am still having the same problem except the crunch is now not as bad as before and it takes off normally without shunting at the start. Does this mean that the synchro in me box is screwed? any other ideas would be great!

Cheers
Chris

Do you have some play in the cable or is it too tight? What happened that you changed the clutch disc?

errol,
The cable seems just right not to tight or loss. The reason i changed the clutch disc was that i rebuilt the engine and got i new gearbox and at the same time i put a new clutch disc in. The only thing that hasent been replaced with a new one is the pressure plate but could this be causing my problem?

Cheers
Chris

It could be that your new clutch plate is slightly larger in diameter, meaning that the pressure plate is still gripping on the clutch plate on the outside. This was happening to mine but it wasn't grabbing, just making a small noise. It stopped after about 10 000klm.

If you're getting a "crunch" when shifting your synchros may be worn. Gear lube in a Honda trans is too heavy to lube properly, I've seen countless trans problems due to this one mistake. Usually the case bearings are the 1st to go.Try double clutching & see if that helps. If you're getting a "grind" then you may have a clutch issue.

Alot of cars I've worked on (clutch problems...) Had to do with the throw out bearing not being seated correctly when installed. There are two little flats "under" the retaining wire that goes around it. The fork MUST seatbetween these for it to slide all the way back. Otherwise it sits up about a 1/4" and really screws up the geometry of the throw out bearing, and stays engauged and spinning. Don't forget to grease where it slides up and back.
Or the retaining wire could have broke?

Thanks for the info everybody hopefully it will help me identify the problem. The noies is definately a crunch and it only happens when the car is warm (does not crunch at all when the car first starts, the crunching starts after about 20min and gets worse the longer it is driven). If this rings a bell to anybody could they let me know just in case it points me in a more specific direction.

Cheers
Chris
