hi im keen to do some work on my civic ('79 1200)
, I've read alot but have very little physical experience with pulling stuff off cars and putting it back on etc. but I really want to learn. Could you guy recommend which workshop manuals etc. would be the best to get and any general books that would help me.

The factory Honda repair manual, they are cheap on e-bay. Not super expensive from your dealer.
Also get the "How to rebuild your Honda car engine" by Tom Wilson. Out of print but grab it if you find it (e-bay).

I think the Haynes manual is the easiest to read. It has all the info the factory manual has and more. Moreover, most of the diagrams in the book are from the factory manual.

Have confidence. You don't have to invent this stuff, all you have to do is figure out what they were thinking when they built it. The technology is very low, it's all like 100 years old. Haynes is good, chiltons is ok. Even better, get both. The jump is in vocabulary. Ask questions if you have to, and read before you start. It's a lot like cooking, but the oil is dirty.
