I got a rough quote from a mechanic yesterday about replacing these, he believes over $100 (aud) per wheel and then around $80 a bearing. he didn't check the prices of the bearing, just guessed.
is it really going to cost me $400 to get my bearings replaced? i've seen cars with new bearings for cheaper than that!
thanks

It all depends who does the work. Changing the front wheel bearings involves pulling off the front uprights, pressing out the drive flanges, pressing out the bearings, pressing in new bearings, pressing in the drive flanges, refitting the uprights, then giving it a wheel alignment. If you pay a mechanic to do all that then of course it'll cost a bit (labour isn't cheap). I wouldn't be at all surprised if someone charged you $100 a side (not including the wheel alignment) to do all that. It would save you a bit if you took off the uprights and refitted them yourself but you still need to get someone to press the drive flanges and bearings in and out. The bearings themselves shouldn't cost a lot. My cousin just got the rears done on his Civic and all the bearings and seals (both sides) came to about $80 and it costed something like $100 to get them fitted, but the rears are a lot simpler, involving just pulling off the drums, pressing out and in bearings, refitting drums. I would expect that the fronts would be fairly similar in price, maybe a little more, but certainly not $80 a side.

I replaced the front wheel bearings in my car a couple of times (once cause they were old, and once during the fron-t end rebuild). I was able to get excellent quality aftermarket bearings for about $30US apiece. Lucky enough my dad knows someone that has a 10 ton hydraulic press, so we didn't have to pay anyone for labour. ;)

I've just today purchased a new inner rear wheel bearing for my '75. The cost for the bearing itself was about $30 Canadian (according to Yahoo, that's about $37 Australian). That's just the part cost without labour, though... I've got access to the appropriate equipment, so I'll do it myself.

The front wheel bearings are available from Repco in Australia for a reasonable price.
