Hey Ray,
You may not want one that bad... I've owned two of them...top end is 80MPH (downwind)...they don't really get that much better gas mileage than our Civics...60MPH is about 5500RPM...they have a roller bearing crank assembly which is fine till it breaks...then it's high a dollar fix...almost no aftermarket parts available, and some factory parts are virtually nonexistant...trust me they are no where near the ride our 1stGen Civics are. I do wish I'd kept the one I bought new in 1973 for 1575.00 out the door...drove it a year and put 6000 mi. on it then sold it to a friend, and he drove it till the wheels rusted off. I should have put a tarp over it instead.

What is so crappy about them??? Engine?? Who cares dump in something different. I only remember ever seeing one in my life and I thought at the time that is was dam ugly now it is kinda growing on me. I was only a little kid when I saw one and at that time the cars that were cool were Mustangs, camaros and even a Daytona hemi car that was near by. My Brother back then was driving a 73 Toyota Corolla. To tell you the truth I just remember looking at one from the back as it sat in a parking space and thinking "weird".
If anyone know where there is a hatch back kicking around let me know. Also was the back window plexi glass? Reason why I ask is the blue one up top looks like the hatch glass is bent at the top or is it just a reflection?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By John S. ( - 207.160.161.178) on Saturday, December 02, 2000 - 02:29 pm:

Rear window is glass...outer window frame is plastic...they had a bad habit of popping the rear glass out in really cold weather if you were lucky enough to hit the right bump. Most of them you see have some kind of funky glue or silicone holding them in now.
I repeat...this was not the car that made Honda what it is today...but they are part of it's history none the less.

They probably don't drive like the civic, no..
That is why they design newer cars. But it does have the classic value the civic doesn't have yet. If you have one in good shape, cherish it and the motor-cycle-engine it carries. Did you guys also get the S800?? It's like a lil' roadster with a lil' bigger high-rev engine..
These cars are worth something here in Holland, for sure. They are Honda's first cars, the civic was Honda's first succesfull car (off course)!

No, only one was made... back in the 50's... it is a convertable so the head room is not a problem... but you might be kissing legs to fit.

The car in the yard that I posted above is a 1959 Vespa.....you know the same people that made the Vespa scooters. There were about 2500 of them sold here in N America. They actually have alot of leg room in them as they use the "hood" area. The engine is in the back and is a 2 stroke. They weigh about 800lbs and are 8'11" by 50". That car is one I am trying to get my wifes support on the purchase. It is in California. They are pretty rare. And such a neat little rig. If anyone knows where there are any micro cars like this or Isettas or Meshersmidts let me know. Micro cars are sooo cool!!

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Travis (24.4.254.128) on Sunday, June 17, 2001 - 04:21 pm:

Yeah.. that is awsome. How much is the place charging you for it... ? Is it running... What size 2 stroke.. A two seater I am guesing. IS there any place on line that has info on any of these micro production cars? Turning it into a convertable with the top being removable would be real nice. Big 2 stroke maybe... But yeah that is a neet little car... with a big enough engine I bet you could get it to pull wheelies.

I am not sure of the engine size. It is a convertable. The center of the roof is canvas and folds down. The guy wants $3000 for it. The starter motor went on it 7 years ago and it has not run since. Yes it is only a two seater. There are a few links. Do a search on "vespa 400" you should find something.

Can you peeps please Give me some advice on making a long distance purchase and delivery. The present owner does not have the title as he lost it but is getting another for it. I am not sure what shipping co I am using yet but I have a few quotes comming in. Some will not ship cars that are not running. We have not hammered out the final price and I am not sure even what payment method to use. I am in Canada and he is in California. The vespa will be insured for the delivery. Anything I should be wary about. Go ahead and fire your suggestions away. Thanks guys.

shipping long distances.............

I had my 76 CVCC shipped from LA to Buffalo, then drove it home (near Toronto, Ontario, Canada) - cost $700 US 4 years ago.

I also had my 76 1200 shipped from Columbia SC, to Niagara Falls,NY ,then drove it home , it cost $400 US last year.

as far as shipping overseas... never done it.

as far as crossing borders... the US border guys seemed to be wannabe cops who probably failed the academy, but are still on a power trip AND have a gun ... they treated me like a criminal despite me EXPORTING FROM the US and importing into Canada. ... I was locked in a room while they inspected the car THOROUGHLY in a locked garage.

I didn't understand why they cared whether I was exporting a classic !?!?!

when I got to the Canadian side..... the Canadian Customs official asked if I had anything to declare. I said the car in the parking lot. He asked for the ownership and bill of sale. stamped it... I paid the duty... and drove off. He never even left the building to inspect it... he looked out the window towards the parking lot where it was parked next to the bridge to the US, and said he had one just like it in high school and loved it too.

AND I WAS IMPORTING IT !! you think that customs officials from any country would be most concerned with what comes into their country, not necessarily what leaves their country !!!

That's what they did was to take out the stock gauges and put in the Autometers. If your doing the same remember to think about a fuel gauge if your car does see street use. Some CVCC's had the separate fuel and temp gauges in a separate pod in the center of the dash.

Yes, Autometer Phantom Series Guages. Fit quite nice, almost perfect! I needed a Tach that would rev to 10K rpms. You'll need an adapter or fix a bracket to hold the speedo cable in.

They also have matching small guages for oil pressure, temp, etc. that would probably fit in the additional deluxe guage pod in the center of the dash.

These aren't cheap, but very accurate!

Thats not mine, just thought everyone would be interested in seeing how similiar the Z600 aircooleds are to the 1200 civics. Gotta love the way those doors open too. So nobody knows what that silver round 'cap' is behind the rear window?

I am pretty sure the silver cap is just decoration.

Well it doesnt appeal to me. Shave it, fill it and slap some paint on it. Anyway from the pics it looks like a lot of parts from the 600 would be interchangeable with the 1200; seats, mirrors, steering wheel, headlights, directional lights, marker lights etc. I wonder why they changed the way the hood opens (or bonnet-for our AU amigos) on the 1200s? I am glad they did, it gives it nice appearance. Which way does it open on the S600 & S800? In remarkable shape those cars can carry a five digit price, like the pic up above.

I've seen the RatFink before, but I'm usually the one driving the Civic, and he's usually the one driving a jacked up, rustbucket, four by four with little or no mufflers.

Ok, Ratfink by definition isnt desirable. But I was copying that character that Ed Roth made famous in the 60s or 70s (before my time). Bad graphics anyway, I need more computer classes.

In a Fast Fours magazine here in Australia, someone sent in a picture of one of these with a 1200 in it. It was in the Readers Rides section in the last couple of pages. Now that would be pretty quick.

I'll take it if he doesn't want it Darrell. My dash is starting to suffer cracks from heat and sun.

I owned one of those TN360 trucks. It was very cool and in mint condition. I had to move in a hurry and swapped it for a driveshaft and steering rack. Idiot. They rev like buggery and you can fit in Kawasaki 900 pistons and they actually do wheel stands!!

Hello Darrell,
Yes I would love to get that dash cover, it will save my mint dash from the harsh AZ sun. Thanx, I will send you $15 for the cover and shipping. Just tell me your address. I would buy the mat but someone else already sent me one, thanx again. Heres my address...

Opps I thought you meant mat as in floor mat, cause I put a want ad up for one of those. I guess you were talking about the dash mat though. Yes I want it.

I'm glad to help. It doens't hurt to get some money back for it either. I'd like to get a new dash but I'll just keep putting tons of chemicals on the one I have. :) I'm still here at Andrews AFB. Our job does go to Saudi, but that's nothing new. I'll probably volunteer to go after I move next year. I hope to be stationed somewhere in CA (my home).

Darrell
