So just before I left Los Angeles for a month long European trip, my 79 wagon (California specs, special emissions etc.) caught fire from what is suspected a fuel leak (oh and for your added amusement know that my 89 civic and wife's truck also took a dump;) I'm a total newb to 1stgens (bought this one in 2008) I know one thing is the charcoal canister and another MAY be the purge control solenoid valve, but what I'm concerned about is the damage to the bits on the carburetor. i thought I had an extra carburetor in my parts bin, but it's missing some of those electrical things pictured here melted.
aI do very little work of my own on my car but I want to try and get as many parts that are gone and put them on it, so when I do push/drag/tow this beast to a mechanic they have what they need.
What I would LOVE from you experts is some identification of what went up in smoke, what should be replaced, what's going to be easy to find, what's going to be a pain, oh and some positive reinforcement, because the more I look at it, it doesn't seem to be THAT bad to me... (NEWB ignorance?) Oh, and it's parked on the street so I'm crossing my fingers the city doesn't come drag it away. here's some pics:
(ps, my hood latch doesn't want to lock anymore? is there some plastic or rubber in there that may have melted away that is keeping that from functioning?)

Re: Fire salvage, ID help
I had just had the two front seats done for less than $220, luckily they were salvageable.
the fateful day, i was half smart and didn't open the hood, one of the reasons the fire didn't get too bad.

Re: Fire salvage, ID help
Yeah, driving it the first day is definitely the biggest inspiration
and there's a civic in my neighborhood, but I remember him wanting to sell it, so I fear it won't be driving by anytime soon...
userspeedy is sending me a big car package this weekend and I found a wiring harness on line auctions and there's a craigslister in town who has some odds and ends!
this little ninja's gonna fight again

Re: Fire salvage, ID help
update, so it took me a while to get back at it, but I'm back at it. I've had a great amount of support locally and especially from user Speedy and a few others who will be sending my well needed items by early new year or before. here's a few items that show what little progress I have made. I had to move the car from in front my house as they did some street repairs and my mother in law was not to happy about the car being there, so as soon as the street was done I had two choices, bring it home and hope the parking folks didn't catch me with bad tags or bring it to a mechanic and have them fini$$$$$$$$$$h the job. Well, the mechanic said he would do it... if and when he had room at his shop, and when I got home from his place my neighbor had a ticket on his car for guess what?! expired tags. So i looked into a few storage spaces and decided on an $100 bucks a month out door space (not so exciting considering el niño is supposed to give us a record wet winter.) when I went to my in-law's house and told her my plans she , in true 1st generation Italian mother mode, threw up her hands and said "Oh Chirst you can keep thee damn thing here; but you're gonna have to hear me complain about it!"
Sold!
so here's where I stand physically:
new carburetor, new emissions control something or other, new solenoid do-hickey, scored a wiring harness, and as luck would have it, i didn't really need that much, I have speedy sending my a newly welded clutch pedal as mine got bent to hell, billyeno or shinyrethings may have me covered on Delay Valves, check valves and dashpot check valves. that leaves hood latch cable, accelerator cable and choke cable to re-install as well as all the spaghetti tubing related to the carburetor. the cosmetic stuff? hell I can wait a whole year or more on that stuff. I just want this thing to turn over and me to scream "It's Alive!!" like Dr. Frankenshteen
