Played around for a few hours today. Pulled the radiator, and some other odds and ends in prep for engine/ transmission removal.

My curiousity got the better of me and I removed the valve cover, rockers and oil pump shaft & gear to see how difficult breaking the head bolts would be. To my surprise, they broke very easily. :o

Any ideas as to why the head bolts came loose so easily? :dunno

Any suggestions on how to safely remove the air conditioning? :)

remember these are small ally engines. The head bolts are not torqued really realy tightly so they generally come undone easily enough

Slowly labeling and removing items from the engine bay. Discovered what a b1tch :twisted: it is to remove the shift rod pin. Letting it soak and will get back to it this coming weekend. I'll be trying the c clamp press method next.

I can already see some rust that will need to be dealt with. :evil:

In the long run, pulling out the powertrain will ultimately let this car's engine bay last longer. :)

Finally got the B-Pin removed using the mighty "THOR" method. 100 degree heat and high humidity shortened my work day. Next need to pop out the driveshafts and few more odds and ends and the motor/transmission will be ready to yank out. :)

Finally pulled the engine out. Not the safest thing to do without help or guidance but nonetheless done. The engine bay doesn't look too bad. There's some spots that require some attention. Time to clean, sand and refinish the engine bay. :)

Good job Bob! Was that your first? :wink:

If you get you one of them things that allows you to tilt the engine on the hoist, you'll find that it makes a great difference in time and effort!

Also your pick up point on the engine should be 2 in the front and 1 off your trans, the engine won't be as wobbly in the air.

John, I'm no longer a virgin. :lol: And the 1st time was scary. :oops: Where do I get one of those things? It looks a whole lot more stable using it. :)

I can't remember where I got it from, Jeg maybe, but most places that sell automotive tools should have something. Look at threaded bolt, if it's cheap metal the bolt will heat up and cranking it will be a bitch! Spend the extra and get something that works all the time.

Was it nescessary to remove the engine mounts with all the brackets? I leave everything in place and just remove the 2 nuts from the rubber motor mounts (from under the car), the front engine mount (timing cover) and the 2 dog bones (front & back) and that will allow my to pull the engine out.

Engine out, notice the motor mount brackets are still on the engine.

For me, it's easier to deal with the brackets once the engine is out. But then again I have a 2nd gen, 1st gens may be different.

Just removed the top nut on the front and rear mounts. (tried to follow the service manual as best as possible) :)

Was it easy to get too?

If you look at the motor mount tower, is there a way to access the motor mount from the bottom? I use 2 6" extentions, doesn't matter whether the car is up or down, I'll have access to the mounts.

Beats climbing on the fender, wrenching your arm between the manifolds! :wink:
