Hi,

I have a 1200 that runs on the cool side for the past year or so. It warms up fine and the fan kicks on at the normal temperature while car is idling , but as soon as the car begins to cruise for a short time, the coolant temp drops (according to the gauge in the cluster).

I've changed the thermostat and it's still the same. It's is if the cooling is too efficient....

I am wondering if the coolant temp sending unit is going out. Has anyone here had the same problem before? What should I be checking and where is the collant temp sending unit on the 1200?

all the air your grille picks up during high speeds easily cools the radiator. i think everything is fine, my car does the same.

I'm driving a 85 crx si and right after I put headers on it would do the same. I guess the heat buildup was great and kept the heat in the engine, but after the headers the heat wasn't there anymore and to make a long story short, The thermostat would seat at an angle (looked closed until I saw rub marks) and never really shut. I since replaced it and 'tadaah'
Now it idles nice and low and heats up quick like it should!

When you remove the airpump and other smog related crap, all else being equal, they do tend to run on the cool side at crusing speeds. Too cold if you have real winters. The preheater sheet manifold on the exhaust needs to be connected to the aircleaner as per factory to preheat the air in the winter. I also took an extra grill and blocked it off with sheet PVC which I use as a winter grill, and this helps also. As a matter of fact I am putting it back on the car today, as it appears we are finally heading into winter...have to put on the winter tires too...

Yep, my heater doesn't work when its really cold. I just slap a piece of cardboard between the radiator and grille. A bit more crude than John's way, but it works.

Yep, my 1200 runs on the cool side as well. The cover idea is pretty smart.
