Bumpers

Post by mahnu »

Hi all:

I notice that Twyla and Kurt have these chrome bumpers that are really nice. What are these off of? 1976-1977 civics? I am also noting comments on tucking in the bumpers. Is this an easy mod?

Well.. I was told by Jason to drill some holes in the shock absorbers of the bumpers and push them in . them weld them back up when it's at the desired length :)

US cars got 3 different types of bumpers. There were the '73 only, all chrome without any rubber at all, the 74-77, looked similar to the '73 except they had two rubber bumpers on them to cover up some bolt holes, and the 78/79 versions with the rubber ends. The earlier style bumpers could be mounted on the later cars with some modifications.

If your 78/79 bumpers are in good shape, you could remove the two center rubber pads. If your bumpers are in need of re-chroming, removing the pads can still be done fine, but the chrome will be a different color underneath.

If you do drill the holes in the shock absorbers behind the bumpers, be careful about the oil that may shoot out.

Twyla and I use 74-77 bumpers. They are all chrome as the black strip in the middle was removed. We also ditched the rubber bump stops and covered the holes with stainless caps. The 74-77 bumpers will fit on the 78-79 cars with some minor mods

for the bumper mod goto civic77/tech.php check under Bumper Mod 1.

Jay and Justin gave me the scoop on the drilling, works great and is easy, makes a huge difference. I just used self tapping screws instead of welding until I know exactly how close I want them.

Good bumpers for any year are pretty scarce...I've been looking for 74-77's for some time. So has Kurt. 73's even more so.
