Does anyone know if this is possible? By the looks of it, seems like I'll have to use the support beam from a 78-79 as well w/the bumper since the bumper guards won't line up properly. Can any confirm?

I don’t think that has ever been done, usually it’s the other way around.
I suppose so with some welding at the mounting points. The 78/79 requires more structure and are noticeably stronger due to the internal brace. The 78/79 bumper has a thinner skin than the previous years.
Take a look at the differences and what you have or need to obtain for the conversion.

Yeah I agree, the later bumpers have a more agressive stance, with the earlier ones looking a little anemic. Plus the bumper overriders/guards are complimented by the bumper ends.
