My daughter's EB1 civic has had the timing belt replaced. I have checked the cam timing a few times and it looks OK but to get the motor to run cleanly I have to set the static distributer advance to about 15 degrees instead of 5 degrees (and yes the vacuum advance does work). Any suggestions what might be wrong? Barry

Did you move the little 8mm bolt and adjustment plate near the bottom of the distributor?
It sounds like you may be a tooth off (advanced)
Just re-stab it in again and hit it with the timing light.

You are checking it with the vacume line off and plugged aren't you?

Vacuum line is off and plugged when testing with timing light. Adjustment plate is set so that there is good overlap between rotor and no1 plug outlet at 5 degrees advanced. Motor will run at 5 degrees advanced but stumbles on acceleration. As you advance the timing, the idle speed increases and gets smoother and the stumbling disappears. At 15 degrees advanced, the engine still will not ping at low revs under load so it is obviously happy with that amount of advance. Barry

Berry, just for kicks try (if you have a adjustable timing light) and see what the timing is with the vacume on and off to see if the advance can is working?
That's where I seem to get the best results...Around 12-15deg. It's always bothered me cause the manuals say 6-8

You can have your distributor reworked to bring total advance in at around 2000RPM, this helps too.
